Jane Levy and Jessica Rothe in River horror movie

Fresh off its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the acclaimed slasher River has found a home with Universal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, which have acquired the film and set its theatrical release date.

River will hit theaters on January 15, 2027.

Universal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster reportedly acquired the horror film for $10 million out of TIFF. The movie has already made a strong impression with critics, currently holding a 94% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Jane Levy (Evil Dead) and Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day) lead the cast of the upcoming slasher.

River follows three estranged siblings who return to their hometown following the death of their father. Hoping to honor his memory, they head out onto a remote river to scatter his ashes at one of his favorite spots.

But when their boat breaks down, their family reunion quickly turns into a nightmare. Stranded miles from civilization with no cell service and seemingly no way to call for help, the siblings discover that they are being hunted by a faceless killer emerging from the surrounding woods.

With nowhere to run and danger closing in, the siblings must put years of resentment and old grudges behind them if they hope to survive the night against a brutal and almost mythical threat.

Max Mattern (Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy) and Dane DiLiegro (Prey) also star in the film.

River marks the feature directorial debut of writer-director Joshua Giuliano, who looks to bring a fresh take on the survival slasher to theaters in early 2027.
