‘Happy Death Day 3’ – Jessica Rothe Says the Sequel Is Just Waiting for Universal and Blumhouse

It looks like Happy Death Day 3 is closer to happening than it’s been in years—but there’s still one big hurdle standing in its way.

Franchise star Jessica Rothe has revealed that she and director Christopher Landon have already broken the story for the long-awaited third movie. Now, they’re simply waiting for Universal and Blumhouse to give the project the greenlight.

Speaking with Deadline, Rothe explained that she and Landon recently sat down to map out the entire movie.

“Chris Landon and I have actually broken the whole story, which was really fun,” Rothe said.

The pair reportedly met at a Le Pain Quotidien located between their homes and spent hours working out the third installment.

“And now, we’re just waiting for Universal and Blumhouse to [give us] just a little money,” Rothe added.

That’s easily the most encouraging update we’ve had on Happy Death Day 3 in quite some time.

Rothe previously revealed that she and Landon were committed to developing the movie themselves and getting the story into shape before taking it back to the studio. According to the actress, Landon has come up with what he believes is an “incredible” ending to the trilogy that could perfectly cap off the franchise.

The biggest obstacle may still be the box office.

The original Happy Death Day was a major success when it hit theaters in 2017, earning $125 million worldwide. Its 2019 sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, brought in around $64 million, making the financial case for a third movie considerably more difficult.

Still, the creative team clearly hasn’t given up.

Back in 2020, Landon revealed that the working title for the third movie was Happy Death Day to Us, while teasing that the story would be quite different from the first two films.

Now that the story has reportedly been broken, all that’s left is for Universal and Blumhouse to decide whether Happy Death Day 3 gets its chance to finally happen.
