Jane Levy (Evil Dead) and Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day) face a terrifying fight for survival in the official trailer for River, an upcoming slasher movie from Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. Directed by Joshua Giuliano, the horror film has been earning praise on the festival circuit and will arrive exclusively in theaters on January 15, 2027.

The film is rated R for strong bloody violence, some grisly images, and language. Watch the intense official trailer below for a glimpse of the nightmare awaiting audiences.

What Is River About?

River follows three estranged siblings who reunite to scatter their late father’s ashes along a remote river. Their attempt to honor his memory quickly turns into a fight for survival when they find themselves stranded miles from help, without cell service.

Things take a deadly turn when a faceless killer emerges from the surrounding woods and begins stalking them. With no easy way to escape, the siblings must put aside their long-standing grudges and work together if they hope to survive the night.

Blending a remote wilderness setting with relentless slasher suspense, River promises a brutal battle against a mysterious, almost mythic threat.

River Cast and Director

Alongside Levy and Rothe, the cast includes Max Mattern (Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy) and Dane DiLiegro (Prey).

River marks the feature directorial debut of Joshua Giuliano, who brings a classic slasher approach to the story while using the isolated river setting to heighten the tension.

Early Reviews Praise River’s Slasher Carnage

Early festival reactions have praised River for its suspense, practical approach to slasher conventions, and strong performances. Critics have highlighted the film’s brisk pacing and its use of the remote wilderness setting to intensify the threat.

The trailer also features enthusiastic reactions describing the movie as a visceral horror experience and a terrifying journey into the genre’s bloodiest traditions.

With Jane Levy and Jessica Rothe leading a story filled with isolation, family tension, and a relentless masked threat, River is shaping up to be an appealing choice for slasher fans looking for their next big-screen nightmare.

River opens exclusively in theaters on January 15, 2027.
