Z Nation: Resurrection sequel series bringing the zombie apocalypse franchise back with a new generation of survivors.

The zombie apocalypse isn’t over yet. Z Nation is officially returning with a new sequel series, Z Nation: Resurrection, bringing fans back to the undead-infested world several years after the original show’s conclusion.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Asylum is developing the new series, which will introduce a new generation of survivors facing a devastating zombie threat that could wipe out the last remnants of humanity.

Z Nation: Resurrection Will Introduce a New Zombie Threat

Set several years after the events of the original Z Nation, Z Nation: Resurrection will explore a world facing another deadly undead crisis. The upcoming series promises to expand the franchise’s mythology while introducing new characters and threats.

The first season will consist of 10 new episodes, continuing the franchise’s blend of zombie horror, dark humor, and unpredictable storytelling.

The new series will also look to bring back familiar faces. According to The Hollywood Reporter, original cast members Kellita Smith (Warren), Keith Allan (Murphy), Russell Hodgkinson (Doc), and DJ Qualls (Citizen Z) are in talks to return in supporting roles.

The potential return of these fan-favorite characters would reconnect the sequel with the original series while allowing the story to move in a new direction.

The Asylum Promises a Bigger, Darker Z Nation Story

The announcement comes after years of fans asking for the franchise to return. David Rimawi, co-founder of The Asylum, acknowledged the continued interest in the series and explained why the time was right to revisit its world.

“Z Nation has never really gone away,” Rimawi said, pointing to the fans who have kept the franchise alive and continued asking for its return.

He described Z Nation: Resurrection as an opportunity to revisit the characters and universe audiences know while taking the story somewhere bigger, darker, and more unpredictable.

Vitale also emphasized the qualities that helped distinguish the original show from other zombie series, including its willingness to take risks, embrace humor, and surprise viewers. The sequel aims to build on those strengths while raising the stakes and expanding the franchise’s mythology.

What Happened to the Original Z Nation?

Created by Karl Schaefer and Craig Engler, Z Nation premiered on Syfy in 2014. Produced by The Asylum, the series ran for five seasons and 68 episodes before ending in 2018.

The story followed a group of survivors traveling through a world devastated by a zombie virus that had wiped out much of humanity. Their mission centered on transporting Murphy, a man who had survived a zombie bite, in the hope that his unusual immunity could help save the human race.

Known for combining post-apocalyptic horror with dark comedy and outrageous twists, Z Nation carved out its own identity in the crowded zombie television landscape.

How Black Summer Connects to Z Nation

The franchise previously expanded with Black Summer, a prequel series that explored the early days of the zombie apocalypse.

Starring Jaime King as Rose, the Netflix series followed a mother separated from her daughter as she fought to survive and find her. Unlike the more comedic approach of Z Nation, Black Summer leaned into a tense, stripped-down style of survival horror.

The prequel ran for two seasons, delivering 16 episodes before its story ended.

With Z Nation: Resurrection, The Asylum is now returning to the original series’ timeline for a new chapter in the franchise.

Further details, including a premiere date and additional casting announcements, have yet to be revealed.
