After five seasons of the flagship series and two seasons of its animated spinoff, the Stranger Things universe is expanding once again. Netflix has officially announced a brand-new live-action spinoff series titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, set to premiere in 2028.

The upcoming series will take viewers back to Marion, Nevada, in April 1955, making it a prequel to the original Stranger Things series and even the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning filmmaker Joe Wright (Darkest Hour) will direct the first three episodes. Production is scheduled to take place in New Mexico.

What Is ‘Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure’ About?

The new series comes from Stranger Things co-creators and executive producers Matt and Ross Duffer, alongside Kate Trefry, who will serve as showrunner. The series is being produced by 21 Laps Entertainment.

Netflix has not revealed specific story details or casting information yet, but the creative team promises a fresh chapter featuring new characters, a new setting, and more mysteries within the Stranger Things mythology.

Jinny Howe, Netflix Head of Scripted Series for the US and Canada, shared the announcement on Stranger Things Day.

“Stranger Things has always belonged to the fans, and their passion made it a worldwide phenomenon. Today, on Stranger Things Day, we’re honored to partner again with Matt and Ross Duffer and Kate Trefry to give fans a new dimension of this universe to step into,” Howe said.

“Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure takes us to the 1950s with new heroes and all the heart, mystery, and spectacle of the original series. We’re proud to keep building this world with the Duffers, Kate, Shawn Levy, and Joe Wright, and we can’t wait for fans to see what’s next.”

Matt and Ross Duffer revealed that the project has been in development for years, expressing excitement about finally bringing it to life.

“We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating,” the brothers shared.

They also praised Trefry, who has been part of the Stranger Things creative team since Season 2 and wrote The First Shadow, as well as Wright, whose previous work they have long admired.

“It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains, and new… actually, we’re not allowed to say any more. Now, on to casting. In the meantime — watch the skies, nerds!”

Trefry also expressed her excitement about leading the next chapter of the franchise, describing the opportunity to return to its horror, wonder, and mystery while telling an entirely new story.

“Now, it is my insane honor and privilege to be bringing this new chapter of Stranger Things to life alongside them and our incredible director Joe Wright,” she said. “With the support of Netflix and 21Laps, we have had the time of our lives returning to all the horror, wonder and mystery of the flagship, while also telling a wholly new story, one we hope will blow your minds and break your hearts all over again.”

21 Laps executive producer Shawn Levy also praised the creative direction, noting that the series will introduce a new ensemble and mythology while retaining the elements that made the original show a global phenomenon.
