Disney‘s animated adaptation may be the most widely recognized version of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but the original novel is considerably darker than its family-friendly musical interpretation. Now, a new adaptation is preparing to bring Hugo’s grim story back to the screen with what could be one of its darkest interpretations yet.

Netflix has released the trailer for The Hunchback, Soul of Paris, a new French-language adaptation arriving on November 27, 2026.

Directed by Jean-François Richet, the film stars Vincent Cassel as Quasimodo. Karim Leklou, Benjamin Voisin, and Daphné Patakia also appear in the cast.

The story follows Quasimodo, the reclusive, disfigured bell-ringer of Notre-Dame Cathedral, who becomes infatuated with Esmeralda, a street performer. His feelings are unrequited, however, and he isn’t the only man pursuing her. As her other suitors become increasingly dangerous, Esmeralda finds herself caught in a tragic struggle involving obsession, jealousy, and power.

Hugo’s original 1831 novel famously ends in tragedy. Esmeralda is executed after being falsely accused of a crime, while Quasimodo takes revenge on Claude Frollo by pushing him from the cathedral. Afterward, Quasimodo finds Esmeralda’s remains and ultimately dies beside her.

It’s a considerably bleaker conclusion than the one audiences know from Disney’s 1996 animated film.

A Darker Take on Victor Hugo’s Classic

Richet has also discussed the historical inspiration behind his interpretation of Quasimodo. In an interview with Vanity Fair France, the director referenced research by English archivist Adrian Glew, suggesting that Hugo’s character may have been inspired by a real stonemason the novelist encountered.

“According to an English archivist, Adrian Glew, the character is based on a stonemason the novelist supposedly met. So we’re starting from a plausible premise rather than a true story,” Richet explained.

The character has appeared in numerous film adaptations over the decades, including Universal Pictures’ celebrated 1923 silent film starring Lon Chaney. Released years before the studio’s iconic Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Mummy, that version helped establish Quasimodo as one of the most memorable figures in early horror cinema.

Now, The Hunchback, Soul of Paris is preparing to introduce the tragic character to a new generation.
