New ‘Constantine’ Movie in the Works at DC With ‘Evil Dead Wrath’ Director Francis Galluppi
After several years of rumors surrounding a new John Constantine movie, the project is finally moving forward at DC. According to Deadline, Evil Dead Wrath director Francis Galluppi has been hired to write the screenplay for a new big-screen adaptation featuring the supernatural detective.
The project is still in very early development, and no other creative attachments or casting details have been announced. Deadline notes that the news comes ahead of the release of Evil Dead Wrath, the seventh installment in the long-running horror franchise, which will mark Galluppi’s first major studio filmmaking project.
Will Keanu Reeves Return as Constantine?
For years, fans have been waiting for an update on Constantine 2, the planned sequel to the 2005 film starring Keanu Reeves. Director Francis Lawrence had previously expressed interest in returning for the follow-up, with the goal of making a much darker and more violent movie that fully embraces an R rating.
Although the original Constantine received an R rating, Lawrence has said he felt the film was ultimately too restrained.
“My big, big regret was that we have an R-rated movie that’s really a PG-13 movie. And if I was going to have to go have an R, I would have really made an R-rated movie. I would have made it much scarier and much more violent and I would have really made an R-rated movie,” Lawrence previously explained.
Discussing his plans for the sequel, the director added that he wanted to deliver the kind of genuinely R-rated Constantine movie he believed audiences had originally wanted.
It’s currently unclear whether Galluppi’s project is connected to Lawrence’s long-discussed sequel or represents a complete reboot of the character. Reeves’ potential involvement has not been confirmed.
The History of John Constantine
Created by Alan Moore, Stephen R. Bissette, and John Totleben, John Constantine first appeared in Swamp Thing #37 in June 1985. The British occult detective specializes in magic and supernatural investigations, becoming one of DC’s most recognizable characters through the long-running Hellblazer comic book series.
Reeves portrayed Constantine in the 2005 film, while Matt Ryan later brought the character to television in DC’s Constantine series and subsequent appearances across the DC television universe.
With Galluppi now attached to write the screenplay, a new chapter for the supernatural detective appears to be taking shape. However, the film’s story, casting, director, and release plans remain under wraps.
