Maya Hawke Joins ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Movie as Live-Action Adaptation Moves Forward
After years of development, the long-awaited live-action Magic: The Gathering movie is finally gaining momentum, with Stranger Things star Maya Hawke officially joining the project. The casting marks a significant step forward for the fantasy adaptation, which is being developed by filmmaker Matt Johnson and could serve as the starting point for a larger shared universe.
Reports of a Magic: The Gathering movie have circulated for years, but the project began taking shape when Johnson boarded as director. The filmmaker has since been busy with projects including Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie and the Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony, leaving the status of the fantasy adaptation somewhat uncertain.
According to Deadline, Hawke has now joined the cast in a significant role. While the production is expected to feature an ensemble cast, sources told the outlet that Hawke’s character will be particularly important to the story. The filmmakers reportedly prioritized securing the Stranger Things star before beginning auditions for other roles.
‘Magic: The Gathering’ Movie Could Launch a Shared Universe
The live-action adaptation is expected to be part of a much larger franchise strategy. Alongside the feature film, the project is reportedly intended to help establish a shared universe that could eventually include television series.
First released in 1993, Magic: The Gathering became one of the most influential fantasy trading card games in history. Created by Richard Garfield, the game combines fantasy storytelling, collectible cards, strategic combat, and deck-building mechanics. More than three decades later, its popularity continues to make it a major property in the gaming world.
Despite its enormous following, however, bringing a fantasy game to the screen has historically presented some challenges.
Can ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Avoid the Problems of Previous Fantasy Adaptations?
The history of fantasy game adaptations offers a mixed track record. The 2000 Dungeons & Dragons movie, made with a reported $45 million budget, earned approximately $33.8 million worldwide and was widely criticized. Its reputation has improved somewhat among genre fans, but it remains an example of how difficult it can be to translate a beloved gaming property into a successful movie.
The 2016 adaptation of World of Warcraft, titled Warcraft, performed considerably better commercially, particularly in international markets, but received mixed critical reactions.
More recently, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves offered a different approach. Released in 2023, the adventure film earned a 91% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received considerably stronger critical support. Although its box office performance fell short of expectations, its ensemble-driven storytelling and humor helped it develop a dedicated following.
That balance could be particularly important for Johnson’s Magic: The Gathering adaptation. Known for his comedic sensibilities and unconventional storytelling, the filmmaker could bring a different perspective to a fantasy property with decades of established mythology.
Johnson previously entered discussions to direct the project, as reported in our earlier coverage of the developing adaptation.
With Maya Hawke now attached, the long-awaited Magic: The Gathering movie appears to be taking a meaningful step toward becoming a reality. Further casting announcements and production details have yet to be revealed.
