Gillian Anderson and Rebecca Hall to Star in Psychological Thriller ‘The Portrait’
Gillian Anderson (Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma) and Rebecca Hall (Onslaught) are set to lead the cast of The Portrait, an upcoming psychological thriller from writer and director Sara Colangelo (The Kindergarten Teacher). According to Deadline, the film is being described as a seductive game of deception centered on two women connected by the same man.
Anderson will play Valeria, an internationally acclaimed writer who has devoted much of her life to her career and her longtime secret lover, Martín, a wealthy businessman. When Martín suddenly falls ill and becomes inaccessible, Valeria’s carefully constructed world begins to unravel.
Desperate to see him and remain by his side during his final days, Valeria comes up with an unusual plan. She commissions Martín’s wife, Isla (Hall), an artist, to paint her portrait. The arrangement allows Valeria to secretly enter Martín’s home and become involved in the intimate dynamics of his family.
What follows is an increasingly tense psychological confrontation between the two women, as the boundaries between lover and wife begin to collapse inside the family’s grand London townhouse.
Sara Colangelo Directs ‘The Portrait’
The Portrait is based on the novel by Ilaria Bernardini, with Colangelo adapting the material for the screen. The filmmaker says the project continues her interest in morally complicated characters and stories exploring female power and transgression.
“I am beyond excited to be partnering with Gillian and Rebecca. Directorially, the film continues a particular interest I have in themes of moral ambiguity and female transgression– in women’s power and subversiveness,” Colangelo said in a statement.
Producers Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman-Keren also expressed their enthusiasm for the project, praising Bernardini’s source material and Colangelo’s vision.
“The moment we read Ilaria’s brilliant book we knew Sara was the perfect filmmaker to bring this suspenseful, honest and surprising story to the screen,” the producers said.
They also highlighted the casting of Anderson and Hall, describing their pairing as an opportunity to bring the film’s complex characters to life in what they envision as a stylish, Hitchcockian thriller.
With two acclaimed performers at the center of a story involving secrecy, obsession, and deception, The Portrait is shaping up to be an intriguing psychological thriller. Further details, including production updates and a release date, have yet to be announced.
