‘Casket Girls’ First Look: Gabrielle Union Takes on New Orleans Vampires

Gabrielle Union is heading into vampire territory in Casket Girls, a new horror movie set in the dark and bloody history of New Orleans.

The first look at the film has arrived, offering a glimpse at Union alongside Mike Colter, Raúl Castillo, Matt Frewer, and Thomas Lennon.

Casket Girls comes from director Justin Dyck, who previously delivered the wonderfully creepy Anything for Jackson in 2020.

The movie follows Detective Shay Williams (Union) and her partner Galpin (Colter), who are investigating a child’s terrifying supernatural encounter. Their investigation takes a very wrong turn when they accidentally unleash the legendary Casket Girls from beneath a centuries-old New Orleans church.

Trapped inside with a group of survivors, the detectives must find a way to outsmart the bloodthirsty vampires before they’re hunted down one by one.

The movie draws inspiration from the real-life Casket Girls of New Orleans, a group of young women sent from France to the city during the early 1700s to become wives for French colonists.

The women arrived carrying luggage that reportedly resembled small coffins, earning them the nickname “Casket Girls.” Their arrival also coincided with an increase in murders in New Orleans, leading to rumors that the women were actually demons or vampires.

According to the historical legend, the women were eventually confined to the attic of the Ursuline Convent, adding another layer of mystery to the story that has survived for centuries.

The horror movie was written by Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (Night at the Museum), with Keith Cooper (Anything for Jackson) and Dyck contributing revisions.

Aura Entertainment has acquired the U.S. rights to Casket Girls, which is currently being presented to international buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival market.

With New Orleans, vampires, an old supernatural legend, and the director of Anything for Jackson behind the camera, Casket Girls certainly has our attention.
