The rules of survival in a horror movie are usually pretty straightforward: stay quiet, keep moving, and never let the monster catch you. But in Remain Calm, losing control of your emotions could be the deadliest mistake of all.

Released just in time for Halloween, Remain Calm is a 14-minute horror short written and directed by Jake Lewis. The film has attracted millions of viewers on YouTube, surpassing 5.5 million views since its release on October 12.

Part of the appeal is its unusual premise, along with a cast that includes Pauly Shore, Nick Swardson, and genre favorite Doug Jones, best known for playing memorable creatures in films such as Pan’s Labyrinth.

Remain Calm Turns Anxiety Into a Horror Movie Nightmare

What happens when a monster can detect its victims through their anxiety? That’s the unsettling idea at the center of Remain Calm, which imagines a world where keeping your cool is the only way to survive.

The filmmakers describe the concept as a reversal of the central rule in A Quiet Place, where making a sound can get you killed. In Remain Calm, the danger comes from feeling anxious.

The creature, known as Mr. Frett and played by Kevin Keppy, can only see its prey when they experience anxiety. That leaves the film’s characters with a terrifying challenge: how do you stay calm when your life depends on it?

It’s a simple but effective horror concept that taps into a feeling many people can recognize, turning everyday stress into a potential death sentence.

Pauly Shore, Nick Swardson, and Doug Jones Star in Remain Calm

The short features a combination of comedy talent and horror experience, with Pauly Shore and Nick Swardson appearing alongside Doug Jones, whose extensive creature work includes Pan’s Labyrinth.

Speaking to PEOPLE about the response to the film, Shore expressed his excitement over its growing audience, saying he was thrilled that viewers were enjoying the project and wishing everyone a happy Halloween.

The short’s mix of dark humor, creature-driven horror, and an immediately understandable premise has helped it find an audience online. Its rapid rise in views also makes it a timely Halloween watch for horror fans looking for something different from the usual seasonal releases.

Practical Effects Bring the Monster to Life

The creature effects in Remain Calm were created practically by Gorgazma, the team behind Pizza Panic Party. The production combined location shooting with scenes filmed on a soundstage at Reel Ghost Studios, which was founded by Lewis and his production team.

The studio features a range of standing sets, including a medieval bar, a sci-fi cantina, and a cave, alongside a large soundstage where custom environments can be constructed for productions.

That hands-on approach gives the short a practical-effects foundation while allowing its filmmakers to build a distinctive world around the central monster.

Jake Lewis Has a History of Viral Short Films

Remain Calm is the latest project from Lewis and his creative team, who have previously attracted attention for short films based on well-known entertainers and cultural figures.

Among those projects is a short biopic about Robin Williams, which received coverage from major media outlets. Lewis also directed The Court Jester, featuring Pauly Shore as Richard Simmons. The short premiered in Park City alongside the Sundance Film Festival and reportedly surpassed one million streams within 24 hours of its release.

Another project, The Cowboy and The Samurai, focused on Jack Nicholson and John Belushi. It premiered at the Chinese Theatre through Dances With Films and received coverage from Variety.

With Remain Calm now reaching millions of viewers online, Lewis has another short film connecting with audiences through a distinctive concept and an unconventional approach to horror.
