‘River’ – New Images Reveal Jessica Rothe and Jane Levy in Brutal New Slasher

Jane Levy (Evil Dead) and Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day) are teaming up for a brutal new slasher, and the first images from River have arrived ahead of its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Directed by Joshua Giuliano, River follows three estranged siblings who return to their hometown following the death of their father. Hoping to scatter his ashes at his favorite spot along a remote river, their somber trip quickly turns into a nightmare when their boat breaks down.

Stranded miles from civilization with no cell service, the siblings soon discover they’re not alone. A faceless killer has emerged from the surrounding woods, and the only way to survive is to put their bitter differences aside and work together.

The new images, released ahead of the film’s TIFF premiere, offer a first look at what Giuliano describes as a “beautiful, brutal” slasher.

The filmmaker says River draws inspiration from classic ’70s horror, including The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Halloween, while attempting to put its own spin on familiar slasher conventions.

“I wanted to make the kind of slasher film that I wanted to see,” Giuliano tells Variety. “Something that was stripped down to its core elements.”

For Giuliano, the appeal of the genre comes down to its most basic and terrifying premise: ordinary people being relentlessly hunted by a killer.

Max Mattern (Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy) and Dane DiLiegro (Prey) also star in the film, which marks Giuliano’s feature directorial debut.

River premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival this week.
