‘Crystal Lake’ Showrunner Teases an Iconic ‘Friday the 13th’ Mask—But It’s Not the Hockey Mask
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding Jason Voorhees is that he was always the killer behind the Friday the 13th franchise. In reality, Jason’s mother, Pamela Voorhees, was the original killer.
In the first Friday the 13th, Pamela sets out for revenge against the counselors of Camp Crystal Lake, driven by the trauma of Jason’s drowning years earlier. Jason himself wouldn’t become the franchise’s central killer until later.
And while the hockey mask is now inseparable from Jason’s image, he didn’t actually wear it when he first appeared as the killer.
In Friday the 13th Part 2, Jason concealed his face with a simple burlap sack. The iconic hockey mask wouldn’t appear until Friday the 13th Part III, ultimately becoming one of the most recognizable horror icons in movie history.
Crystal Lake Will Reveal a Different Mask
Peacock’s upcoming Crystal Lake prequel series is taking viewers back to the origins of the franchise, with the story placing greater emphasis on Pamela’s trauma and her transformation into a killer.
That raises an obvious question: Will Jason wear the hockey mask?
According to showrunner Brad Caleb Kane, fans will indeed see a mask—but it won’t necessarily be the one they’re expecting.
“There is a mask. It might be a different mask than fans are used to, but it will not be a different mask than fans have seen,” Kane told Entertainment Weekly.
He also teased that the series will explore the origin of the mask and explain why it exists within the story, promising that the mystery will ultimately connect to the larger Friday the 13th mythology.
That leaves plenty of possibilities. The most obvious candidate would be the burlap sack Jason wears in Friday the 13th Part 2, but Kane’s comments suggest there could be more to the mask’s history than fans realize.
A New Chapter for Friday the 13th
Crystal Lake marks the first live-action Friday the 13th project since the 2009 reboot, making the series a major return for the franchise.
Moving away from the familiar hockey-mask version of Jason is a risky choice, particularly given how beloved the character has become. At the same time, the prequel gives the filmmakers an opportunity to explore corners of the mythology that the movies never fully developed.
Knowing that the series will feature a mask that fans have already seen—but not necessarily the hockey mask—only makes the mystery more intriguing.
We’ll have to wait until the series premieres to find out exactly what mask Jason wears and how it fits into his story.
All eight episodes of Crystal Lake premiere on Peacock October 15.
What do you think Jason’s mysterious mask will be?
