‘Smile’ Star Sosie Bacon Joins MGM+ Horror Series ‘The Black Tapes’
Sosie Bacon (Smile, Family Movie) is joining Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Mama, Nightwatch) in The Black Tapes, an upcoming horror series from MGM+. Based on the acclaimed horror podcast of the same name, the eight-episode series will explore paranormal investigations, disturbing supernatural cases, and a centuries-old conspiracy lurking beneath the surface of the ordinary world.
According to Deadline, Bacon will play Alex Regan, a methodical physicist who teams up with Coster-Waldau’s character to investigate seemingly inexplicable phenomena.
What Is The Black Tapes About?
The Black Tapes follows Dr. Richard Strand, played by Coster-Waldau, a brilliant psychiatrist with a mysterious past. Alongside the relentless scientist Alex Regan, Strand sets out to debunk reports of hauntings, possessions, disappearances, and other unexplained events documented in the infamous black tapes.
However, as the pair dig deeper into these disturbing cases, they begin uncovering evidence of a hidden occult world operating alongside our own. Their investigation ultimately draws them into a centuries-old apocalyptic conspiracy that threatens to change everything they thought they knew.
With its combination of paranormal mysteries, occult mythology, and psychological horror, the series has the potential to appeal to viewers who enjoy supernatural investigations and stories that blur the line between science and the unexplained.
The Black Tapes Is Based on a Popular Horror Podcast
The upcoming adaptation is based on the 2015 horror podcast created by Terry Miles and Paul Bae. Both creators will executive produce the television series and contribute to its writing alongside showrunner John Rogers, known for Leverage.
MGM+ is developing the project as an eight-episode series, bringing the podcast’s unsettling mythology to television.
Michael Wright, global head of MGM+, described the series as a story built around society’s fascination with unexplained phenomena, promising a combination of cinematic storytelling and provocative entertainment.
When Will The Black Tapes Premiere on MGM+?
Production on The Black Tapes is expected to begin in Vancouver in January 2027. The series is planned for MGM+ audiences in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Latin America.
An official premiere date has not yet been announced.
