‘Portrait’: Finn Wittrock and Supriya Ganesh Star in New Supernatural Horror Thriller From Robert Schwartzman
Stars of American Horror Story and The Pitt are coming together for a new supernatural horror thriller. Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story) and Supriya Ganesh (The Pitt) lead the cast of Portrait, a new film directed by Robert Schwartzman (The Unicorn).
Production has officially wrapped on the project, and Deadline has unveiled a first-look image from the upcoming film.
Written by Zac Stanford (Sleepwalking), from a story by Schwartzman and Stanford, Portrait explores the terrifying intersection of grief, obsession, and the supernatural. The story follows a couple whose dream of a fresh start takes a disturbing turn after they move into a small-town farmhouse.
When Mark (Wittrock) and his pregnant wife Leah (Ganesh) leave the big city behind to build a new life together, they hope to escape the chaos and start a family. But their peaceful retreat begins to unravel after they discover an unsettling antique portrait depicting a mysterious pioneer woman.
Supernatural visions, inexplicable violence, and long-buried secrets soon send Mark on a terrifying journey to save his family.
The cast also includes Whitmer Thomas (Weapons), Este Haim (Licorice Pizza), and Andrew Divoff (Wishmaster).
Robert Schwartzman on the Inspiration Behind ‘Portrait’
Schwartzman says the film grew out of a story he and Stanford developed in 2018, inspired by their shared interest in antiques and the unsettling possibility that an object might carry something sinister from its past.
“I find the most impactful horror stories are the ones that make us rethink our lives, a ‘what if this happened to me?’ story and situation,” Schwartzman explained. “Zac and I wrote the story for Portrait back in 2018 inspired by our love of buying antiques and the concept of not knowing where these objects come from, who they belonged to.”
He continued, “What if there was something evil attached to a hidden treasure we stumble upon, unexpectedly inviting a terrifying energy or spirit into our lives? I gravitate to horror films and I scare very easily so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a story that could have this same effect on someone else.”
Jonathan Kier and Matt Brodlie, Co-Presidents of Upgrade Productions, also praised the project, describing it as a supernatural horror thriller that combines a character-driven mystery with broad commercial appeal.
“Robert has created a genuinely unsettling supernatural horror thriller that amplifies the commercial appeal of a sophisticated, character-driven mystery,” they shared. “Finn is an extraordinary actor for this kind of material, and the combination of this cast and Robert’s distinctive visual sensibility makes Portrait a compelling proposition for international audiences.”
There is currently no release date for Portrait.
