‘Underwater’ Director Reveals Emotional Deleted Ending for Kristen Stewart’s Norah

Kristen Stewart as Norah Price in Underwater, the 2020 sci-fi horror film directed by William Eubank.

William Eubank has revealed a previously unseen moment from Underwater that could have made the film’s explosive finale even more heartbreaking. The director shared an unused shot featuring Kristen Stewart’s Norah Price, offering a glimpse of a more intimate ending for the character while confirming that a director’s cut is unlikely to happen.

The footage features Norah sharing a quiet, sunlit moment with a man who appears to be her late fiancé, Sam. Although the scene is brief, it carries significant emotional weight given everything Norah endures throughout the 2020 sci-fi horror film.

Eubank shared the shot on X, explaining that it was intended to appear just before the film’s final moments.

“Figured I’d share this, since there will probably never be a director’s cut of Underwater,” the filmmaker wrote. “When Norah pulls that trigger and the place blows…the second to last shot was this moment when time slowed… Norah’s choice…”

The Deleted Scene Gives Norah’s Sacrifice a More Emotional Meaning

Released in 2020, Underwater follows a group of researchers fighting to survive after a catastrophic incident destroys their underwater drilling facility. As the survivors struggle to reach safety, they discover that something far more terrifying is lurking beneath the ocean.

Stewart plays Norah, an engineer who becomes one of the central figures in the desperate fight for survival. By the film’s climax, she makes a devastating decision, staying behind so that Emily and Smith can escape before triggering the station’s reactor and destroying the creatures pursuing them.

Norah’s sacrifice is particularly tragic because the film has already established the emotional loss she carries. Earlier in the story, she opens up to Emily about her late fiancé, Sam, revealing how much she would give for another moment with him.

The newly shared footage appears to offer precisely that moment as Norah prepares to make her final decision.

Whether the scene represents a memory, a vision, or an imagined reunion, its placement would have added another layer of emotional depth to the finale. Rather than focusing exclusively on the destruction unfolding around her, the moment would have briefly shifted the attention to what Norah was leaving behind.

It also offers a more intimate perspective on her sacrifice, connecting her final act to the personal loss that has shaped her character.

William Eubank Reveals How the Shot Was Filmed

Despite its emotional significance, the scene was captured with a surprisingly simple setup.

Eubank explained that the shot was filmed as an additional pickup on the Fox studio lot, using a fountain and a mirror to reflect sunlight into the water behind the actors.

“We shot this as a pickup on the Fox lot by a fountain and used a mirror to push the sun into the water behind them. Shot it on my little Sony camera,” he explained.

The filmmaker also noted that the moment was filmed near the end of an important period for the studio.

“Prob literally one of the last things made by 20th Century Fox before Disney came in. Small moment but such a beautiful one imo.”

The production details make the footage especially interesting. Despite the scale of Underwater and its elaborate underwater environments, this particular moment relied on a modest setup to create a quieter, more personal image.

Will There Ever Be an ‘Underwater’ Director’s Cut?

Unfortunately, fans hoping to see more of Eubank’s original vision for Underwater shouldn’t expect a director’s cut anytime soon. The filmmaker’s comments suggest that the newly revealed footage may be one of the few additional glimpses audiences will get of the material that didn’t make the final film.

Eubank’s post should also be distinguished from the alternate ending included among the movie’s digital extras. The newly shared shot was intended to accompany Norah’s decision to trigger the explosion, offering a different emotional beat within the existing finale rather than simply replacing the ending.

Although the footage doesn’t change Norah’s ultimate fate, it provides a fascinating look at how a small scene could have altered the emotional impact of the film’s final moments.

For fans of Underwater, it’s a reminder that even a tightly paced sci-fi horror movie can contain quieter character moments that never make it to the screen. And in Norah’s case, this brief glimpse of the life and love she lost may be one of the film’s most affecting missing pieces.
