The acclaimed folk-horror film The Holy Boy is heading to Shudder this November, bringing its unsettling story of a seemingly perfect Italian village to streaming audiences.
Directed by Paolo Strippoli, the film will begin streaming on Shudder on Friday, November 27. The release follows a successful festival run that included the New Wave Best Director and Audience Awards at Fantastic Fest.
Strippoli co-wrote the screenplay with Jacopo Del Giudice and Milo Tissone. The film stars Michele Riondino, Giulio Feltri, Paolo Pierobon, Romana Maggiora Vergano, Sergio Romano, Anna Bellato, Sandra Toffolatti, and Roberto Citran.
‘The Holy Boy’ Reveals the Dark Secret Behind Italy’s Happiest Village
The Holy Boy follows Sergio, played by Riondino, a teacher haunted by his past who transfers to Remis, a secluded village known for having the happiest residents in Italy.
However, the town’s cheerful reputation hides a disturbing tradition. Every week, villagers gather to embrace Matteo, a withdrawn 15-year-old played by Feltri. His touch supposedly offers relief from pain and sorrow, making him the center of the community’s devotion.
As Sergio investigates the ritual, he begins to realize that the villagers’ attachment to Matteo may be far more sinister than it first appears. His attempt to save the boy, known as the Angel of Remis, sets off a dangerous confrontation with a community determined to protect its secrets.
Fantastic Fest Award-Winner Arrives on Shudder
The film’s recognition at Fantastic Fest has helped establish The Holy Boy as a notable entry in contemporary folk horror. Its story combines an isolated setting, unsettling local traditions, and a community whose apparent happiness conceals something deeply troubling.
With its November streaming debut approaching, horror fans will soon be able to discover Strippoli’s latest film from home.
