‘Rot’ – Mike Flanagan Producing New Body Horror Movie Starring Matthew Lillard

Mike Flanagan is getting into body horror.

The filmmaker and his Red Room Pictures banner have boarded the upcoming psychological horror movie Rot as producers, with Deadline reporting the first details on the project.

Rot will mark the feature directorial debut of Alexandra Magistro, an executive at Red Room Pictures who previously worked on Flanagan projects including The Fall of the House of Usher and The Life of Chuck.

The film has also assembled an impressive horror-heavy cast, with Matthew Lillard, Amber Midthunder, and Cooper Koch set to star.

Written by Geo Bradley, whose screenplay landed on the prestigious Black List, Rot is being described as Repulsion by way of David Cronenberg—a combination that should immediately grab the attention of body horror fans.

While an official logline has not yet been released, the story centers on an antisocial man suffering from obsessive compulsions who remains haunted by the death of his hoarder mother.

Hoping to confront his traumatic past, he takes a job as a trauma cleaner, entering homes and cleaning up the aftermath of deaths and other disturbing situations. But as the work continues, it begins to invade his psyche, causing his mental state to deteriorate and his reality to slowly unravel.

Magistro has already worked closely with Flanagan through Red Room Pictures, serving as a producer on projects including The Fall of the House of Usher and The Life of Chuck. She is also attached to Flanagan’s upcoming The Exorcist movie.

With Flanagan producing, a Black List script, and a cast led by Matthew Lillard, Amber Midthunder, and Cooper Koch, Rot is shaping up to be a particularly unsettling addition to the psychological body horror genre.
