‘Recluse,’ Tribeca Horror Movie from ‘Antlers’ Writer, Gets 2027 Release from Vertical
Recluse, the gothic horror-thriller from Antlers and “Servant” writer Henry Chaisson, is coming to theaters in 2027. Vertical has acquired the North American distribution rights to the film, which made its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year.
The feature marks Chaisson’s directorial debut and has also screened at genre festivals including Fantasia and FrightFest.
“Making Recluse was an extraordinary journey alongside a truly exceptional cast and crew, and seeing it connect with audiences at Tribeca, Fantasia and FrightFest has been hugely rewarding,” Chaisson said. “I’m thrilled to be partnering with Vertical to bring it to the big screen.”
What Is Recluse About?
Sasha Frolova (The Empty Man) stars as Joan, a solitary audio engineer who returns to her family’s deteriorating country estate after receiving news about her ailing father. An acclaimed but reclusive artist, he has long been rumored to have dabbled in the occult.
As Joan begins uncovering a malevolent secret that has been hidden for decades, she must determine whether the horrors surrounding her are connected to her father’s past or are manifestations of her own troubled mind.
The film combines gothic atmosphere and psychological horror, with its story centered on family secrets, the occult, and the unsettling question of what is real.
Recluse Features an Experienced Horror Team
Steven Schneider, the producer behind Paranormal Activity, Hokum, and Undertone, executive produces Recluse through his production label, Spooky Pictures.
Schneider described the film as an immersive horror experience built around disturbing storytelling, striking imagery, and haunting sound design. He also praised Chaisson’s debut, expressing confidence in the filmmaker’s potential within the genre.
Vertical’s Peter Jarowey similarly praised the film’s atmospheric approach and said the company was excited to bring it to theaters following its festival screenings.
The cast also includes Mia Vallet (“Believe”), Xander Berkeley (Candyman), Kimball Farley, Toby Poser (Hellbender), Frankie Seratch, Gillian Cooper, and Christine Nyland.
With Vertical planning a theatrical release in 2027, Recluse is the latest independent horror film to move from the festival circuit toward a wider audience. An exact release date has not yet been announced.
