Summer H. Howell as Carrie White in Mike Flanagan’s Carrie series on Prime Video

Mike Flanagan’s television adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie is officially returning for a second season! Amazon Prime Video has renewed the horror series following a strong debut that saw the eight-episode first season top the streamer’s global television rankings.

According to Deadline, the renewal comes just two weeks after Carrie premiered on October 7. The series, starring Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, reportedly reached the number one position on Prime Video’s weekly global TV series rankings in more than 105 countries. The streamer has not released official viewership figures.

The early success marks a promising start for Flanagan’s latest Stephen King adaptation, which reimagines the classic horror story for a new generation while exploring the pressures of modern high school life.

“Carrie is connecting with both longtime Stephen King fans and a new generation altogether — including young adults and international audiences, with particular strength among female viewers,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios.

“It speaks to the enduring power of this story and signals that Mike Flanagan’s reimagining of the iconic IP has real breadth. We’re excited by where he and Stephen plan to take the story.”

Flanagan also expressed his enthusiasm for continuing Carrie White’s story, suggesting that the series will explore territory beyond the events audiences already know.

“For 50 years, audiences have known and gravitated to Carrie White’s story. From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next,” Flanagan said.

King himself is equally excited about the show’s future.

“I can’t wait for audiences to get to see what’s down the road for Carrie White,” the legendary horror author said. “Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It’s bound to be thrilling.”

What Is Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ About?

The new Carrie series offers a fresh take on King’s iconic horror story, centering on a socially isolated teenager whose extraordinary abilities emerge as she struggles with adolescence, bullying, and an increasingly hostile world.

The official synopsis reads:

“Misfit high-schooler Carrie White (Summer H. Howell) has spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). After her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social-media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.”

The cast also includes Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder, and Matthew Lillard.

Rather than simply retelling the familiar story, Flanagan has indicated that his adaptation is designed to expand the world of Carrie White and explore what happens beyond the infamous prom night.

Mike Flanagan Has a Three-Season Plan for ‘Carrie’

The Season 2 renewal also brings Flanagan closer to his broader vision for the adaptation. The filmmaker previously revealed that his ideal plan would stretch Carrie across three seasons, allowing the story to unfold as a larger narrative rather than a single-season retelling.

“In my dream scenario … I think it’s three seasons. In my dream scenario, I think Carrie has a wonderful three-step arc. It’s a trilogy, really,” Flanagan explained in a recent interview.

Although Prime Video has officially confirmed Season 2, a three-season run has not been announced.

With Flanagan and King collaborating on the next chapter, the upcoming season has the opportunity to take Carrie White’s story in a new direction while building on the mythology of one of horror’s most recognizable characters.
