‘End of Abyss’ Developer Video Goes Behind the Genesis of the Horror Game [Watch]

With Halloween season just around the corner, Section 9 Interactive is preparing to unleash its atmospheric sci-fi horror shooter End of Abyss. Ahead of its October release, the development team has shared a new behind-the-scenes video offering a closer look at the people and ideas behind the game.

Titled “Entering the Facility: Meet the Creators,” the video features several members of the development team, beginning with studio co-founder and programmer Mattias Ottvall.

Ottvall discusses the origins of Section 9 Interactive, explaining how three former members of Tarsier Studios decided to strike out on their own. He also reveals how End of Abyss began life as an early prototype.

According to Ottvall, the project initially felt closer to a fast-paced mobile game. As development progressed, however, the team slowed down the gameplay and placed a greater emphasis on atmosphere and environmental storytelling. That evolution ultimately expanded the scope of the game and helped establish its distinctive identity.

“It just became obvious quite early that, okay, we have something that doesn’t feel so much like other games.”

In End of Abyss, players enter a dark sci-fi world where exploration and tense combat go hand in hand. The story follows Cel, a young combat technician sent to investigate mysterious disturbances deep inside a sprawling underground facility.

What begins as a routine investigation quickly turns into a nightmare as Cel descends through the abandoned complex and uncovers the horrifying truth behind its downfall.

The facility is filled with broken machinery, forgotten corridors, hidden areas, and monstrous creatures that are anything but human. Players will need to upgrade their equipment, adapt to the threats around them, and carefully explore their surroundings to survive.

A scanner and various tools allow Cel to uncover new paths and access previously unreachable areas. As she becomes stronger, players can return to earlier sections of the facility to discover secrets and corridors that were previously sealed off.

End of Abyss launches October 1 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via the Epic Games Store.
