‘The Watcher’ Season 2 Finally Begins Filming Four Years After Netflix Renewal
The entertainment industry has experienced more than its share of delays and disruptions over the past several years, and The Watcher is another example of just how long some projects can take to return.
Netflix’s hit mystery thriller, created by Ryan Murphy and starring Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale, premiered in 2022 and quickly found an audience despite receiving mixed reviews. The streamer ultimately renewed the series for a second season, but fans have been waiting ever since for it to actually enter production.
Now, that wait is finally coming to an end. According to Deadline, The Watcher Season 2 has officially begun filming, four years after Netflix ordered the new season.
Netflix has not revealed exactly why the second season took so long to get underway. However, the extended wait comes as the show’s returning stars and creator have remained involved in a number of other projects.
Watts and Cannavale are both returning for Season 2, while Murphy has continued his prolific run of television projects. The first season of The Watcher premiered around the same time as Monster, another major Netflix success from Murphy. That series recently returned for its fourth season, while Murphy has also continued working on American Horror Story and American Horror Stories.
Based on a true story, The Watcher follows Dean Brannock (Cannavale) and Nora Brannock (Watts), a couple who believe they have found their dream home in the idyllic suburb of Westfield, New Jersey.
After putting their savings into the property, however, the Brannocks quickly discover that their new neighborhood is anything but welcoming.
The couple’s strange new neighbors include Pearl (Mia Farrow), an eccentric older woman whose brother Jasper (Terry Kinney) repeatedly sneaks into the Brannocks’ home and hides inside their dumbwaiter.
There’s also Karen (Jennifer Coolidge), a realtor and former acquaintance of Nora’s who makes it clear that the family may not belong in the neighborhood, along with neighbors Mitch (Richard Kind) and Mo (Margo Martindale), whose obsession with property lines adds another layer of tension.
But things take a much darker turn when the Brannocks begin receiving disturbing letters from someone calling themselves “The Watcher.” As the threatening messages continue, the family’s dream home becomes a nightmare and the disturbing secrets hiding within the neighborhood begin to surface.
With Season 2 now officially in production, fans can finally expect more of The Watcher story. Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the new season.
