Toho Unveils First Images From ‘Leviathan,’ Bringing the Best-Selling Space Survival Horror Manga to Life
A desperate fight for survival unfolds in the depths of space in the first images from Toho’s upcoming sci-fi survival thriller Leviathan, an adaptation of Shiro Kuroi’s best-selling manga. The film is currently in post-production ahead of its Japanese theatrical release next year.
Set in 2127, Leviathan follows a group of students whose journey through space turns into a nightmare after a catastrophic accident leaves their spacecraft stranded. With oxygen running dangerously low and only one life-support system remaining, the survivors find themselves trapped in a brutal fight for their lives.
The story begins when three looters board an abandoned spacecraft called the Leviathan. Inside, they discover the diary of a middle-school student named Kazuma, whose writings reveal the horrifying events that unfolded aboard the vessel.
Through his diary, a disturbing account emerges of the passengers’ desperate struggle to survive as their oxygen supply dwindles and the situation descends into violence.
Created by Shiro Kuroi, the original Leviathan manga ran on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ platform between 2022 and 2023, earning a following for its claustrophobic setting and brutal survival-horror premise.
Who Is Directing ‘Leviathan’?
The film is directed by Michihito Fujii and Ryohei Shingu, with Fujii co-writing the screenplay alongside Izumi Takahashi.
The cast includes Shunsuke Michieda (Even If This Love Disappears From The World) and Natsuki Deguchi (Look Back).
When Does ‘Leviathan’ Release?
Leviathan is scheduled to arrive in Japanese theaters on February 11, 2027.
Paris-based sales company Goodfellas is handling international distribution outside of Asia and plans to introduce the first promotional footage at the American Film Market (AFM).
More release details and international distribution plans are expected as the film moves closer to completion.
