Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie surpasses $400 million at the worldwide box office.

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil continues to dominate the global box office, crossing another major milestone over the weekend and officially surpassing $400 million in worldwide ticket sales.

The latest box office figures put the film’s global haul at $400 million, including $157.3 million from theaters in the United States. The achievement makes Cregger’s take on the popular video game franchise one of the biggest horror releases of the year.

In fact, Resident Evil is now one of just three horror movies released this year to cross the $400 million mark, joining Backrooms and Obsession. The former finished its theatrical run with approximately $400.6 million worldwide, a figure Cregger’s film could soon surpass.

‘Resident Evil’ Becomes the Highest-Grossing Film in the Franchise

The $400 million milestone also makes Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil the highest-grossing installment in the long-running film franchise.

That record was previously held by 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which finished its worldwide theatrical run with $312.2 million. Cregger’s film has now comfortably surpassed that total.

The achievement is particularly notable considering the franchise’s previous attempt at a cinematic reboot. In 2021, director Johannes Roberts brought the video game series back to the big screen with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

Released during the COVID-19 pandemic, the reboot struggled at the box office, opening with just $5.3 million domestically before finishing its worldwide run with approximately $41.9 million.

Cregger’s film reportedly carried a $75 million production budget, compared to the reported $25 million budget for Welcome to Raccoon City. The significantly larger investment has paid off, with the new installment delivering a major theatrical success.

Will Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ Get a Sequel?

Beyond its box office performance, Resident Evil has also earned strong critical recognition. The film currently holds a 96% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated video game movie in the platform’s history.

With the franchise reaching a new commercial peak under Cregger’s direction, the possibility of another installment is certainly worth watching.

A sequel hasn’t been officially confirmed, but given the film’s box office performance, don’t be surprised if we hear more about the future of Resident Evil in the coming months.
