Lucio Fulci’s Horror Classic ‘The Beyond’ Is Getting a New Remake From Severin Films
Lucio Fulci’s cult horror classic The Beyond is getting a new remake.
Hangtime International Pictures and Severin Films are teaming up to develop remakes of several genre classics, with Fulci’s infamous 1981 Italian horror film The Beyond serving as the first project in the new partnership.
According to Variety, the companies plan to secure remake rights to horror films for theatrical releases, streaming, and physical media. The Beyond is reportedly the first of several remakes planned by the partnership over the next two years.
‘The Beyond’ Remake in the Works
Released in 1981, The Beyond is one of the defining films from Italian horror filmmaker Lucio Fulci and the second installment in his unofficial Gates of Hell trilogy, following City of the Living Dead and preceding The House by the Cemetery.
The original movie follows a woman who inherits a hotel in Louisiana, only to discover that the building hides a terrifying connection to the supernatural. When a gateway to Hell is opened beneath the hotel, an increasingly nightmarish series of events begins.
The remake will give a new filmmaker the opportunity to reinterpret Fulci’s surreal and brutally violent vision for a modern audience.
“This is a rare opportunity for an established director to reimagine The Beyond, contemporize it as a classic of experiential horror and further the ever-growing cultural significance of Fulci’s work,” Hangtime co-CEO Frank Murray said.
Murray also pointed to the possibility of exploring Fulci’s larger Gates of Hell mythology in future projects.
Severin Films and Hangtime Team Up
The partnership brings together Hangtime International Pictures and Severin Films, a company known for restoring and distributing cult and genre films.
David Gregory, co-founder, president, and CEO of Severin Films, said the company has spent two decades preserving genre cinema and sees the remake partnership as an opportunity to introduce classic horror properties to a new generation.
Severin’s Claudia Marra also expressed excitement about bringing The Beyond back to life, saying the project has already generated interest and that the company believes it is an appropriate starting point for the new partnership.
No director, cast, release date, or production start date has been announced for The Beyond remake yet.
Lucio Fulci’s ‘The Beyond’
Written by Dardano Sacchetti (Demons) and Giorgio Mariuzzo (The House by the Cemetery), The Beyond has become one of Fulci’s most celebrated works and a landmark of Italian gore cinema.
The film follows Liza Merril, who inherits the Seven Doors Hotel in Louisiana and soon discovers that the property sits above one of the seven gateways to Hell.
As the supernatural horrors surrounding the hotel intensify, Fulci unleashes the film’s notorious combination of surreal imagery, zombies, possession, extreme gore, and nightmarish atmosphere.
More than four decades after its original release, The Beyond remains one of Fulci’s most influential horror films. Now, Hangtime and Severin Films are preparing to bring the story back for a new generation.
No details have been announced yet regarding the other horror classics planned for the partnership.
