Barcelona-based production company Filmax, known for cult horror hits like [REC] and The Nameless, is set to introduce its latest psychological horror project The Nest at the Cannes market, according to Variety.

Directed by Hugo Stuven (Solo) and penned by Santiago Lallana (Solo), César de Nicolás, and Stuven himself, The Nest tells the chilling story of Marta, a woman so consumed by fear of the outside world that she confines her young son and elderly mother within their isolated mountain home. Their fragile sense of safety begins to unravel with the arrival of a stranger determined to tear apart the world Marta has meticulously created.

Michelle Jenner (Bird Box: Barcelona) leads the cast as Marta.

“The Nest has all the hallmarks of a classic suspense thriller,” said producer Laura Fernández of Filmax. “It’s a deeply unsettling story about what can happen behind closed doors—disturbing, terrifying, and uncomfortably plausible.”

Fernández describes Marta as “a cold, calculating woman who believes she’s doing what’s necessary to protect her family. The tension never lets up, and what unfolds within the confines of a single house reflects horrors that could easily make headlines in real life.”

Although production on The Nest is set to begin soon, Filmax is offering a first look through a promotional reel at Cannes to attract international buyers. The strategy mirrors their approach with Jaume Balagueró’s 2002 horror film Darkness, a Miramax-backed U.S. breakout starring Anna Paquin and Lena Olin.

While the promo is shot in English, the final version of The Nest will be in Spanish. The teaser hints at a mysterious box—its contents unknown—that plays a key role in the film’s unnerving atmosphere.

Born in December, the darkest and coldest month of the year, Francesco Monti developed a passion for all things horror from an early age. A lifelong horror aficionado, his love for films, books, and the darker side of storytelling eventually led him into filmmaking, with a focus on horror, thriller, and sci-fi. In May 2022, Francesco turned that lifelong passion into GoreCulture — a platform created not only to bring horror fans closer to the films, stories, and culture they love, but to give a voice and valuable exposure to talented filmmakers, creators, and artists whose work deserves to be discovered, regardless of how established they are.
