Russell Crowe Teases ‘The Pope’s Exorcist 2’: “We’ve Only Just Scratched the Surface”

Russell Crowe could be returning as Father Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist 2, with the Oscar-winning actor revealing that there’s still plenty of story left to explore.

Crowe starred in the 2023 supernatural horror movie as Father Amorth, the real-life Vatican exorcist whose case files inspired the film. Despite mixed reviews, The Pope’s Exorcist was a box office success, earning around $77 million worldwide against a reported $18 million budget.

A sequel was officially announced by producer Jeff Katz in 2024, but updates on the project have been relatively scarce. Now, Crowe has offered a new tease about where things stand.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Crowe discussed his changing attitude toward sequels and revealed that he remains interested in returning as Amorth.

“I was always negative,” Crowe explained, noting that he grew up viewing sequels as inferior follow-ups made primarily to capitalize on the success of the original. However, he says his perspective has changed after seeing numerous sequels become “iconic or legendary” in their own right.

That shift in perspective could be good news for The Pope’s Exorcist 2.

“There are certain characters where I’ve been approached about a sequel, like Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist,” Crowe said. “They want to do another one of those, and that’s such a rich character who wrote 12 books about his experiences, and we’ve only just scratched the surface. So that would be interesting to do.”

The comments are particularly interesting considering that a Pope’s Exorcist trilogy was previously discussed. The real Father Amorth reportedly documented decades of exorcism cases, giving the filmmakers plenty of material to potentially explore in future movies.

For now, there’s no confirmed release date or production timeline for The Pope’s Exorcist 2, but Crowe’s comments suggest the actor is still open to returning to the world of supernatural horror.
