Supernatural Queer Romance ‘No Rest for the Wicked’ Set for 2027 Release

Following its Cheval Noir Award win at Fantasia earlier this summer, the supernatural gothic romance No Rest for the Wicked has landed a U.S. distribution deal.

According to Deadline, Altered Innocence has acquired the film and plans to continue its festival run before bringing No Rest for the Wicked to theaters in 2027.

Set on the remote Faroe Islands in 1862, the film follows a young fisherman whose quiet, isolated existence is upended when Helge ( Pilou Asbæk), a rugged Danish whaler, arrives in his community.

As an unexpected attraction develops between the two men, their forbidden relationship sets off a chain of tragic events that awakens supernatural forces within their deeply religious community. What follows is a dark and haunting story of love, loss, and a passion that refuses to die.

The horror film was written by Rasmus Birch and directed by Kasper Kalle. The cast includes Asbæk (Overlord, Game of Thrones), Egor Venned, Sofia Nolsøe Mikkelsen, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, and Kjartan Hansen.

No Rest for the Wicked draws inspiration from Karl Heinrich Ulrichs’ 1885 short story Manor, which predates Bram Stoker’s iconic Dracula by more than a decade.

Altered Innocence founder Frank Jaffe expressed his excitement about bringing the film to audiences.

“I’ve always had a huge love for queer horror, so it’s especially exciting to get to release one that operates at this level,” Jaffe said. “No Rest For The Wicked is a stunning, sexy and deeply romantic gothic tale that I can’t wait for fans to sink their teeth into!”

The film previously screened at Fantasia International Film Festival, where it received the Cheval Noir Award.

With its festival run continuing, No Rest for the Wicked is currently targeting a 2027 theatrical release from Altered Innocence.
