LaKeith Stanfield and Ben Mendelsohn star in Rob Savage's Molepeople horror movie

Rob Savage, the filmmaker behind Host and The Boogeyman, is heading underground for his next horror movie. Titled Molepeople, the upcoming film will star LaKeith Stanfield (Get Out) and Ben Mendelsohn (The Outsider), with Savage directing from a screenplay by Nathan Elston.

The project was announced during Blumhouse‘s Blumfest presentation at New York Comic Con, adding another intriguing title to Savage’s growing body of horror work. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film follows a man who ventures into abandoned tunnels beneath New York City, only to discover a disturbing society living below the streets.

The concept could take the filmmaker into unfamiliar territory, combining underground urban exploration with a hidden community and potentially nightmarish discoveries.

What Is Rob Savage’s Molepeople About?

While plot details remain limited, Molepeople centers on a man who descends into the abandoned tunnels beneath New York City and encounters a twisted society hidden from the world above.

The premise leaves plenty of room for speculation about the nature of this underground community. The inhabitants could be physically transformed individuals who have adapted to life beneath the city, or they could represent a secretive society whose disturbing customs and beliefs set them apart from the outside world.

For now, the filmmakers have not revealed whether the movie will lean toward creature horror, psychological terror, or a combination of both.

The project has been in development for several years, with earlier reports from 2024 identifying Savage as the director and Anthony Ramos as a previously attached cast member. The latest announcement brings Stanfield and Mendelsohn into the project.

Rob Savage Continues Exploring New Territory in Horror

Savage first attracted widespread attention in 2020 with a viral short film that convinced his friends he was being attacked by something lurking in his attic. The frightening footage was a clever illusion built around a scene from [REC], but its effectiveness helped launch the filmmaker into the spotlight.

Despite the limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Savage turned that concept into Host, a feature-length horror film about a group of friends conducting a séance over Zoom. When supernatural forces begin targeting the participants, their virtual gathering turns into a fight for survival.

Savage followed Host with Dashcam, which follows a conspiracy-minded livestreamer whose trip to London takes a terrifying turn, and The Boogeyman, his adaptation of Stephen King‘s short story about a family confronting grief while being stalked by a malevolent presence.

His latest film, Other Mommy, adapts the novel Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman. The story follows a young girl who encounters a sinister figure that looks exactly like her mother. The film is arriving in theaters as Savage prepares to move on to Molepeople.

Although Savage’s projects have explored different approaches to horror, they demonstrate his interest in placing ordinary characters in increasingly disturbing situations. Molepeople could continue that trend by turning the hidden infrastructure beneath one of the world’s most recognizable cities into a source of terror.

LaKeith Stanfield and Ben Mendelsohn Lead the Molepeople Cast

Stanfield brings considerable genre experience to the project. His credits include Get Out, Jordan Peele’s acclaimed horror film, as well as Death Note, Haunted Mansion, and the supernatural television series The Changeling.

Mendelsohn is also familiar to audiences through major roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Star Wars franchise. His horror and thriller credits include The Outsider, the television adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, which follows an investigation into a seemingly impossible murder.

With both actors attached, Molepeople brings together performers with experience across horror, science fiction, and supernatural storytelling.

The film is written by Nathan Elston, with Savage directing. Further details about the supporting cast and the characters played by Stanfield and Mendelsohn have not yet been announced.

Molepeople Release Date and Production Details

Production on Molepeople is scheduled to begin later this year, with the film currently set to arrive in theaters on August 27, 2027.

Although the full story remains under wraps, the combination of Savage’s direction, the film’s underground setting, and its mysterious hidden society offers plenty of possibilities for a new horror experience.
