Blumhouse Bringing Horror Game ‘Amanda the Adventurer’ to Life in Live-Action Movie

Published

on

Blumhouse is bringing another popular horror video game to the big screen. The studio has announced a live-action adaptation of Amanda the Adventurer, the unsettling horror game that turns a seemingly innocent children’s cartoon into a disturbing nightmare. The announcement was made during the studio’s Blumfest presentation at New York Comic Con, with Matthew “MatPat” Patrick attached to produce the upcoming movie.

The project marks another step in Blumhouse’s expansion into video game adaptations, following the success of Five Nights at Freddy’s and its sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. While those films brought the terrifying animatronic characters of the popular gaming franchise to theaters, Amanda the Adventurer offers a different kind of horror built around mysterious VHS tapes, retro children’s entertainment, and an increasingly sinister mystery.

No writer or director has been announced for the adaptation, and additional details about the film’s development remain under wraps.

What Is Amanda the Adventurer About?

Originally developed as a horror game, Amanda the Adventurer follows Riley Park, who inherits the house of their reclusive Aunt Kate. While exploring the property, Riley discovers a collection of VHS tapes in the attic, accompanied by an old television set.

The tapes feature episodes of an obscure early-2000s children’s cartoon starring Amanda, an energetic little girl, and her timid companion, Wooly the Sheep. At first, the show appears to be an ordinary, low-budget children’s program. However, Riley soon realizes that something is deeply wrong.

As the episodes continue, Amanda and Wooly appear to communicate directly with Riley through the television. Their seemingly innocent interactions become increasingly unsettling, leaving Riley questioning what the characters want and why the tapes seem to be addressing them personally.

Despite growing unease, Riley feels compelled to keep watching. The deeper they investigate, the more disturbing the mystery becomes.

The game’s appeal comes from the contrast between its colorful cartoon presentation and the sinister secrets lurking beneath the surface. What begins as an apparently harmless children’s show gradually transforms into a psychological horror experience, using familiar VHS imagery and retro animation to create an atmosphere of dread.

Blumhouse Expands Its Video Game Adaptations

The Amanda the Adventurer movie joins Blumhouse’s growing collection of projects based on popular video games.

The studio helped bring Five Nights at Freddy’s to theaters in 2023, adapting the gaming phenomenon about haunted animatronic mascots terrorizing a former family entertainment restaurant. Its sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, followed in 2025, further expanding the franchise’s presence on the big screen.

Unlike those films, Amanda the Adventurer draws its horror from the unsettling nature of children’s television and the mysteries hidden within old videotapes.

Its retro aesthetic and distorted take on familiar childhood entertainment also connect it to the broader analog horror subgenre, which uses outdated media formats, grainy recordings, and seemingly ordinary broadcasts to create a sense of unease.

That approach could offer filmmakers an opportunity to translate the game’s interactive mysteries into a distinctive cinematic experience.

When Will the Amanda the Adventurer Movie Be Released?

The live-action adaptation of Amanda the Adventurer is in development at Blumhouse, with Matthew “MatPat” Patrick attached as a producer.

At this time, the project has no announced director, writer, or release date. Further details about the cast, production schedule, and how closely the film will follow the original game have yet to be revealed.

With its creepy VHS tapes, unsettling cartoon characters, and psychological horror premise, Amanda the Adventurer could offer a fresh take on video game adaptations when it eventually makes its way to theaters.
