‘Something Is Killing the Children’ Movie Taps ‘The Hunt’ Director Craig Zobel
A live-action adaptation of Something Is Killing the Children has taken a major step forward, with Craig Zobel, the director behind The Hunt, officially attached to helm the upcoming horror movie. Based on the acclaimed comic book series by James Tynion IV, the project is being developed by Blumhouse and could bring one of modern horror comics’ most disturbing stories to the big screen.
The news was announced during Blumhouse’s Blumfest presentation at New York Comic Con, marking a significant development for an adaptation that has spent years in development through various iterations.
Created by Tynion and illustrated by Werther Dell’Edera, Something Is Killing the Children has become one of the most successful horror comic book franchises of the past decade. Its premise centers on terrifying, shape-shifting creatures that prey on children in small towns. The catch? Only children can see the monsters, leaving adults unable or unwilling to believe the young victims’ accounts of what is happening.
The comic’s unsettling premise and mythology have helped establish it as a standout in contemporary horror, making a screen adaptation a natural next step for the franchise.
Craig Zobel to Direct Something Is Killing the Children Movie
Zobel brings considerable experience in unsettling genre storytelling to the project. His feature film credits include Compliance, a thriller inspired by real-life events; Z for Zachariah, a post-apocalyptic science fiction drama; and The Hunt, a horror satire that pits strangers against one another in a deadly game.
The filmmaker has also built an impressive television résumé, directing episodes of acclaimed series including The Penguin and Mare of Easttown.
His involvement marks an important milestone for the Something Is Killing the Children movie, which has experienced multiple starts and stops throughout its development. However, details about the film’s cast, production schedule, and potential release date have yet to be announced.
James Tynion IV Teases Big Plans for Erica Slaughter
The announcement follows recent comments from Tynion, who teased that the franchise was gaining momentum and that he would be more directly involved as the property expands beyond comic books.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the writer discussed his confidence in Blumhouse’s willingness to tackle stories involving children in danger and revealed that his role in developing the adaptation would be more hands-on this time around.
Tynion also praised Jason Blum for championing the project and recognizing its potential beyond the printed page.
At the center of the story is Erica Slaughter, a mysterious monster hunter who arrives in towns where children report terrifying creatures that adults cannot see. As Erica investigates these cases, she confronts increasingly dangerous threats while uncovering secrets surrounding the monsters and the organization connected to her work.
Tynion believes Erica has the potential to connect with audiences worldwide, building on the character’s popularity among comic book readers.
His comments suggest that the creative team sees the adaptation as an opportunity to introduce Erica and the world of Something Is Killing the Children to a much wider audience.
Something Is Killing the Children Is Also Getting an Adult Animated Adaptation
The live-action movie isn’t the only screen project in development. An adult animated adaptation of Something Is Killing the Children is also in the works, potentially opening the door for different interpretations of Tynion and Dell’Edera’s horror universe.
The franchise has already expanded through multiple comic book spin-offs exploring different characters and communities, demonstrating the breadth of its mythology. That larger world could provide plenty of material for future adaptations if the upcoming projects move forward.
For now, neither the live-action movie nor the animated series has an announced release date, and additional details about their creative teams and production plans remain under wraps.
With Craig Zobel now attached to direct the live-action film and Tynion taking a more active role in its development, Something Is Killing the Children is moving closer to its long-awaited transition from comic book pages to the screen.
