‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Gets Franchise’s First-Ever R Rating

The King of the Monsters is returning to theaters this November, and this time, Godzilla is bringing a brand-new rating with him.

Godzilla Minus Zero has officially been rated R by the MPA for “strong/bloody violence,” making it the first movie in the 72-year-old Godzilla franchise to receive an R rating.

That marks a major departure from the franchise’s usual approach. Godzilla Minus One was rated PG-13, while both Toho’s Godzilla movies and Legendary’s MonsterVerse have generally stayed within PG-13 or more family-friendly territory.

The R rating suggests that director Takashi Yamazaki is taking the sequel into considerably darker territory.

Godzilla Minus Zero will stomp into North American theaters on November 6, 2026, courtesy of GKIDS.

Yamazaki returns to direct, write, and oversee the film’s visual effects. Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe are also back to reprise their roles from Godzilla Minus One.

The sequel takes place in 1949, two years after the events of the previous film, as Japan struggles to rebuild following the devastation left behind.

The official synopsis reads:

“War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here.”

The movie was filmed using high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX, with both the picture and sound specifically optimized for IMAX screens.

And if the first teaser is any indication, Godzilla may not be the only kaiju Japan has to worry about this time around.

Godzilla Minus Zero hits theaters in North America on November 6, 2026.
