‘Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo’ Trailer Unleashes Lily James and Shun Oguri in Takashi Miike’s Yakuza Thriller

Takashi Miike is back in the crime-thriller game.

The legendary Japanese filmmaker behind Audition and Ichi the Killer returns with Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, a standalone sequel to Abel Ferrara’s 1992 crime classic. The film makes its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival tonight, and NEON has released a brand new Japanese trailer ahead of the premiere.

Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo follows Shun Oguri (Godzilla vs. Kong) and Lily James (Baby Driver), alongside WWE superstar Liv Morgan, Shotaro Mamiya, Shūhei Nomura, Nanase Nishino, and Yuka Mukai.

The film centers on a disgraced Tokyo detective who descends into a dangerous world of corruption, addiction, and violence while investigating a case involving a vengeful former yakuza, a mysterious FBI agent, and the missing daughter of a powerful American family.

The movie serves as a standalone continuation of the Bad Lieutenant franchise. Abel Ferrara’s original film was released in 1992 and was followed by Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans in 2009.

The screenplay comes from Daisuke Tengan, who previously worked with Miike on Audition and 13 Assassins.

Sam Pressman, the son of original Bad Lieutenant producer Edward R. Pressman, produces through Pressman Film alongside Jeremy Thomas for Recorded Picture Company, Naoaki Kitajima for Nippon Television, and Misako Saka for OLM.

Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo is expected to hit U.S. theaters later this year from NEON.
