Idris Elba faces a desperate fight for survival in Above the Below, an upcoming survival thriller that traps three astronauts beneath the ocean after a disastrous mission in space. Lionsgate has released the first trailer for the film ahead of its theatrical debut on December 4.

Directed by Elba and Martin Owen, the movie turns a space mission gone wrong into a claustrophobic underwater nightmare. With oxygen running out and contact with mission control lost, the stranded crew must make impossible decisions as their chances of survival rapidly disappear.

What Is Above the Below About?

According to Lionsgate, the story begins when three astronauts survive a disaster in space, only to crash-land in the crushing depths of the ocean.

Cut off from mission control, the crew faces dwindling oxygen supplies, mounting dangers, and an increasingly desperate race against time. With every breath potentially their last, they must find a way to survive an environment where escape seems almost impossible.

The premise taps into the tension that makes survival thrillers so effective: characters trapped in an unforgiving situation, with limited resources and a ticking clock counting down to disaster.

Recent films such as Whalefall, Open Water, and 47 Meters Down have explored similarly terrifying scenarios, putting characters in underwater environments where survival depends on quick thinking and nerve. Above the Below adds a science-fiction element by placing its astronauts in a submerged spacecraft far from the help they desperately need.

Idris Elba on the Practical Effects in Above the Below

Elba co-directs the film with Martin Owen and stars alongside Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. The screenplay was written by Elizabeth Morris, Matthew Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent.

The production also emphasized practical filmmaking to make the astronauts’ predicament feel as claustrophobic as possible.

Speaking to Collider, Elba explained that the team built a spacecraft set, submerged it in water, and filmed many sequences underwater.

“I’m very excited to show people that I can hold my breath for four minutes. Joking aside (I can hold my breath for that long), but you know, this film was very practical,” Elba said.

“We did a lot of the things in this film. We did build the spacecraft, we submerged it in water, we shot a lot of it underwater. There’s a real practicality to this film that adds to the claustrophobia and the thriller aspect of it.”

Elba added that he hopes audiences will feel immersed in the characters’ journey from space to the ocean, experiencing the tension and claustrophobia alongside them.

When Does Above the Below Arrive in Theaters?

Above the Below will open in theaters on December 4.

With its underwater setting, dwindling oxygen supply, and emphasis on practical effects, the film looks to deliver a tense survival thriller in which the greatest threat may be the environment itself.
