‘World War Z 2’ Eyes Brad Pitt Return With Edward Berger Set to Direct

The long-awaited World War Z 2 is finally moving forward, with Brad Pitt set to return and Edward Berger attached to direct the next chapter in the zombie franchise.

Released in 2013, World War Z was based on the bestselling novel by Max Brooks and became one of the biggest zombie movies of the modern era. The production was famously troubled, however, undergoing extensive rewrites, creative changes, and reshoots that reportedly pushed its budget beyond $250 million.

Despite the behind-the-scenes difficulties, the film was a major box-office success, earning approximately $540 million worldwide.

Now, more than a decade later, the franchise is officially moving toward a second installment. Earlier this year, Paramount indicated that a new World War Z movie was a priority, and Deadline reports that Pitt will reprise his role as Gerry Lane. Edward Berger, the filmmaker behind The Riders, is set to direct.

Plot details remain under wraps.

The original film followed Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator who is separated from his family when a rapidly spreading zombie outbreak throws the world into chaos. Using his experience and government connections, Gerry travels across the globe searching for answers while desperately trying to reunite with his wife and daughters.

The movie took a very different approach from Brooks’ novel. Rather than focusing on a single protagonist, the book presented a worldwide account of a fictional zombie war, jumping between different locations and perspectives to explore how governments, militaries, and ordinary people responded to the outbreak.

It’s currently unclear whether World War Z 2 will continue Gerry’s story or take the franchise in a completely different direction.

This isn’t the first attempt to bring the sequel to life. David Fincher was previously attached to direct, with development continuing for several years before Paramount ultimately pulled the plug on that version in 2019. It remains unknown whether Berger’s movie will build upon any of Fincher’s previous plans or start from scratch with an entirely new story.

For now, Pitt’s return marks the biggest piece of news for the long-awaited sequel. After more than a decade away, Gerry Lane is officially heading back into the zombie apocalypse.
