Ron Perlman Says He’d Return for ‘Hellboy 3’ if Guillermo del Toro Directs

Ron Perlman as Hellboy in Guillermo del Toro’s original Hellboy film series, with fans still hoping for Hellboy 3.

Ron Perlman is still determined to return as Hellboy for a third film directed by Guillermo del Toro, even if it takes another decade to happen. The actor recently reaffirmed his commitment to completing the original Hellboy trilogy, insisting that he has no interest in revisiting the character unless del Toro is involved.

Speaking with Deadline, Perlman explained that the original films were always intended to form a trilogy. However, after the release of Hellboy II: The Golden Army in 2008, plans for a third installment never came to fruition.

Now 76, Perlman remains enthusiastic about the possibility of returning to the role, even if the project takes years to materialize.

Why Ron Perlman Still Wants to Make ‘Hellboy 3’

Perlman first portrayed the demonic paranormal investigator in Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy in 2004, returning four years later for Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Although the films developed a devoted following, the planned third chapter never moved forward.

According to Perlman, the sequel left several major storylines unresolved, including Liz Sherman’s pregnancy with twins and the prophecy surrounding Hellboy’s arrival on Earth.

“I’ve said so much about this and pissed off enough people, but I’ll say it again for you: the original movies were meant to be a trilogy,” Perlman told Deadline.

“In Hellboy II, we left off at a very awkward moment where the Liz Sherman character is pregnant with twins, and none of the promises of Hellboy being summoned into existence to destroy the world has been addressed. That would all have been in the third film, and I’ll always advocate for the making of the third film.”

For Perlman, completing the story with del Toro remains the only version of Hellboy 3 worth pursuing.

Ron Perlman Won’t Return as Hellboy Without Guillermo del Toro

Perlman made it clear that he isn’t interested in playing Hellboy in another reboot or standalone installment. Instead, he wants to finish the story he began with del Toro more than two decades ago.

“I’m not interested in doing any other version of Hellboy other than finishing the trilogy with Guillermo,” the actor explained.

He described the potential sequel as an epic adventure built around themes of destiny, human nature, and the consequences of hubris.

Despite his age, Perlman isn’t ready to give up on the idea.

“I’m 76 now, and if he comes to me and I’m 86, we’ll still do the motherf-cker,” he added.

The actor’s comments make his position clear: if del Toro ever decides to revisit the franchise, Perlman is ready to return, regardless of how much time has passed.

Has Guillermo del Toro Discussed ‘Hellboy 3’ With Ron Perlman?

Although del Toro has continued working on ambitious genre projects, including his Oscar-winning adaptation of Frankenstein, there is no confirmed development on a third Hellboy film starring Perlman.

When asked whether he and del Toro had recently discussed the possibility, Perlman declined to elaborate, simply responding, “No comment.”

For now, there is no official announcement confirming that the original creative team will reunite. Perlman’s comments reflect his continued enthusiasm for the project rather than confirmation that production is moving forward.

What Happened to the ‘Hellboy’ Franchise After Ron Perlman?

Following del Toro and Perlman’s two films, the franchise returned to theaters with a 2019 reboot starring David Harbour. A second reboot, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, followed in 2024, with Jack Kesy taking over the title role.

Neither film continued the storyline established in the original movies, leaving the proposed trilogy unfinished.

Perlman’s latest comments will likely reignite interest among fans who have spent years hoping to see del Toro’s original vision reach its conclusion. However, until the filmmaker or studio confirms a new project, Hellboy 3 remains an unrealized possibility.
