‘Jennifer’s Body 2’ Will Show a More “Sympathetic” Side of Megan Fox’s Demon
Diablo Cody is teasing a deeper look at Jennifer in Jennifer’s Body 2, promising to explore the loneliness and emotional struggles behind Megan Fox’s demonic character. The upcoming horror sequel will revisit the cult classic with the return of key creative talent, including Fox, director Karyn Kusama, and screenwriter Cody.
Speaking on the Petticoat Revolution podcast, Cody explained that she has always viewed Jennifer as a sympathetic character, both before and after her transformation into a demon. While audiences often remember her as a powerful, dangerous figure, the writer wants to explore the pain and isolation that also define her.
Although specific plot details remain under wraps, Cody’s comments suggest that the sequel will dig deeper into Jennifer’s character rather than simply repeat the original film’s blend of supernatural horror and dark comedy.
Diablo Cody Wants to Explore Jennifer’s Loneliness in Jennifer’s Body 2
Cody discussed her perspective on Jennifer and how that understanding has influenced her approach to the sequel.
“Jennifer is a sympathetic character for me, before and after the transformation,” Cody explained.
The writer pointed to Jennifer’s isolation, loneliness, and insecurity, noting that audiences often remember her at her most powerful while overlooking the vulnerable moments that reveal the person beneath the demonic transformation.
“Everybody remembers Jennifer when she’s like, ‘I am a god,’ or when she’s at her most radiant and at her most powerful. But people forget about these moments in the movie where she’s like a shell of herself, she’s just exsanguinated almost.”
Cody also praised Fox’s performance, highlighting the actress’s ability to portray both Jennifer’s commanding presence and her more vulnerable side.
“And to me, Megan played both of those sides of Jennifer so well.”
The screenwriter suggested that the sequel will give her even more room to explore the character’s emotional complexity.
“One fun thing — I can’t talk about it too much — but you know we’re doing a sequel to this movie, like imminently, and I felt like in the new movie, I was able to explore even more about why Jennifer is sympathetic and what she’s been through.”
She added that Jennifer’s loneliness and the sadness surrounding her character are aspects of the original film that audiences do not always fully recognize.
Why Jennifer’s Body Became a Cult Horror Classic
When Jennifer’s Body arrived in theaters in 2009, its marketing campaign leaned heavily into Fox’s sex appeal, capitalizing on her popularity following the success of Transformers.
However, the film offered something considerably more complicated than its promotional materials suggested.
Written by Cody and directed by Kusama, the horror movie follows Jennifer Check, a high school student who becomes possessed by a demon after a disastrous ritual. She develops a need to feed on male classmates, while her best friend, Needy Lesnicki, struggles to understand what has happened to her.
The film combined supernatural horror, dark comedy, and a story about friendship, insecurity, and the pressures placed on young women.
Its original marketing failed to communicate much of that complexity, contributing to a disappointing reception at the time of its release. Over the years, however, Jennifer’s Body has developed a passionate following, with audiences embracing its feminist themes, sharp humor, and subversive take on the horror genre.
That renewed appreciation has helped pave the way for a sequel that can revisit the characters with a greater understanding of what made the original resonate with viewers.
Megan Fox and Karyn Kusama Return for Jennifer’s Body 2
One of the biggest reasons for excitement surrounding Jennifer’s Body 2 is the potential reunion of the original film’s creative team.
Fox is expected to reprise her role as Jennifer, while Kusama and Cody are returning as director and screenwriter, respectively. Amanda Seyfried, who played Needy in the original, has also been mentioned in connection with the sequel, although her involvement should not be considered confirmed without an official announcement.
The return of the original creative team could help the follow-up preserve the distinctive tone that made the first film stand out, while allowing the characters to evolve beyond the events of the 2009 movie.
Cody’s latest comments indicate that Jennifer’s emotional journey will be an important part of that process. Rather than presenting her solely as a monstrous figure, the sequel could offer a more nuanced exploration of the character’s experiences and the loneliness that followed her transformation.
For longtime fans, that approach could provide a compelling reason to revisit Jennifer’s story.
When Will Jennifer’s Body 2 Be Released?
Although Cody has indicated that the sequel is moving forward, Jennifer’s Body 2 does not yet have an official release date.
Plot details also remain under wraps, leaving fans to speculate about how Jennifer’s story will continue and whether Needy will return for another confrontation with her former best friend.
For now, Cody’s comments offer an early indication of the direction she hopes to take with the sequel: a deeper exploration of Jennifer’s humanity, even as the character remains tied to the demonic horror that defined the original film.
