‘The Boys’ Creator’s ‘Freddie the Fix’ Is Getting a Movie Adaptation

Few comic book creators have developed a body of work quite like Garth Ennis. Whether he’s creating entirely original stories or putting his own distinctive spin on established characters, Ennis has built a reputation for pushing comics into darker, more outrageous territory.

His work on Hellblazer with John Constantine helped introduce him to a wider audience, but it was his creator-owned series Preacher, co-created with artist Steve Dillon, that truly cemented his status as one of the most distinctive voices in modern comics. His work on DC and Marvel characters has also inspired several gritty live-action adaptations, most notably the hit Prime Video series The Boys.

Now, another Ennis creation is heading to the big screen.

Deadline reports that Freddie the Fix is officially being developed as a feature film, with Lawrence Lamont, director of One of Them Days, attached to direct. Kalen Egan and Travis Sentell are writing the screenplay.

Published by Image Comics, Freddie the Fix comes from Ennis and artist Mike Perkins and serves as the debut title from Ninth Circle, a creator-owned horror showcase featuring standalone tales of terror and mayhem.

The official description sets up a particularly twisted world of supernatural problems:

“A twisted horror tale from Garth Ennis (the legendary creator of The Boys and Preacher) and Mike Perkins (Bat-man: First Knight, Swamp Thing)! Hollywood After Dark — werewolves, vampires, zombies, aliens, bogeymen, predators, and…things. They all have their kinks, and they all get in deep sh-t. They all call Freddie…to fix it.”

Image Comics describes the series as “the horror-skewed intersection of The Boys and Ray Donovan”, which gives a pretty good idea of the kind of twisted territory the movie could explore.

Unlike The Boys, which began as an R-rated comic book satire aimed at superhero conventions before evolving into an increasingly dark story of its own, Freddie the Fix is firmly rooted in horror. Its world is populated by werewolves, vampires, zombies, aliens, and other creatures, all of whom apparently have problems that require the services of Freddie.

That premise could make Freddie the Fix an intriguing successor for fans looking for another dose of Ennis’ trademark combination of dark humor, violence, and genre mayhem following the eventual conclusion of The Boys.

The The Boys universe itself continues to expand, with multiple live-action spin-offs in development for Prime Video. However, Freddie the Fix offers something considerably different, leaning much more heavily into supernatural horror rather than superhero satire.

The project also marks another collaboration between Ennis and Amazon MGM Studios, the studio behind the television adaptation of The Boys. Amazon MGM is developing the Freddie the Fix movie, continuing the relationship between the studio and the acclaimed comic book creator.

For now, specific plot details and casting information for the film remain under wraps. With Lamont attached to direct and a screenplay coming from Egan and Sentell, however, Freddie the Fix is officially moving forward.
