‘The Batman Part II’ Halts Production as Director Matt Reeves Temporarily Steps Away

Robert Pattinson as Batman in The Batman Part II, the upcoming Matt Reeves sequel slated for 2028

When Robert Pattinson was announced as the new Batman/Bruce Wayne, anticipation immediately began building around what would become Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The road to release wasn’t an easy one, however, with the project experiencing multiple delays before finally reaching theaters in 2022.

Those delays ultimately proved worthwhile. The Batman earned strong praise from both critics and audiences, with Reeves putting a greater emphasis on Batman’s detective abilities while giving the movie a dark, atmospheric, noir-inspired identity.

Unfortunately, The Batman Part II has experienced its own share of setbacks.

Originally announced in 2022 with an expected 2025 release, the sequel has been pushed back several times. Production finally got underway earlier this year, but the film has now hit another unexpected pause.

According to Deadline, production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused indefinitely while Reeves steps away to deal with a family matter.

Warner Bros. said in a statement:

“Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter … Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”

At the moment, The Batman Part II remains scheduled to hit theaters on February 18, 2028. It’s unclear whether the latest production pause will have any impact on that release date.

The biggest question now is how long Reeves will be away from production. The pause could potentially be brief, allowing filming to resume soon, or it could result in a more significant delay. For now, Warner Bros. and DC Studios haven’t provided a timeline for his return.

Considering what Reeves accomplished with the first film, it’s encouraging that DC Studios is fully supporting the filmmaker and is willing to give him the necessary time rather than rushing production forward without him.

The news comes as the broader DC universe continues to undergo significant changes under James Gunn and Peter Safran, who took over as co-heads of DC Studios. Their new DC Universe launched with Gunn’s Superman, while projects such as Supergirl and the upcoming Clayface continue to expand the franchise in very different directions.

However, The Batman and its sequel exist separately from Gunn and Safran’s interconnected DC Universe. Pattinson’s Batman is part of his own standalone continuity, meaning The Batman Part II won’t directly factor into the ongoing DCU storyline.

For now, fans will simply have to wait for Reeves and the production to get back on track.

Our thoughts are with Matt Reeves and his family during this difficult time.
