Mikey Madison stars in A24’s The Masque of the Red Death coming in 2027

A24’s upcoming The Masque of the Red Death is shaping up to be one of the stranger Edgar Allan Poe adaptations yet—and Mikey Madison says fans can expect to see it in 2027.

Madison, who stars in the film alongside Léa Seydoux, recently offered new details about the upcoming horror movie while speaking with ScreenRant. She described the project as unlike anything she has done before, teasing an unusual mix of slapstick comedy, drama, and dark horror.

“I think next year, definitely,” Madison said when asked when audiences could see the movie. She added that the film takes place in a medieval setting and has a tone she described as “very slapstick and very dramatic and interesting and weird.”

Madison also revealed that she plays two characters in the movie.

What Is A24’s ‘The Masque of the Red Death’ About?

Written and directed by Charlie Polinger (The Plague), The Masque of the Red Death is a radically reimagined take on Edgar Allan Poe’s classic 1842 gothic horror story.

A24 announced the project in 2025, with production beginning in February 2026. Plot details have remained largely under wraps, but Madison plays twin sisters whose lives are divided by the class system surrounding a powerful prince.

The story centers on a mad prince who gathers members of the nobility inside his castle while a devastating plague spreads through the lower classes outside.

One of Madison’s characters is hidden among the peasantry before eventually making her way into the castle, where she becomes caught up in a decadent world filled with orgies, opium, political schemes, revenge, and gruesome violence.

Léa Seydoux (Dune: Part Two, Crimes of the Future) also stars as a calculating lady-in-waiting who is determined to climb the social hierarchy.

A Darkly Comedic Take on Poe

Don’t expect a completely faithful or traditionally somber adaptation of Poe’s story.

Polinger previously described his version as a dark comedy with a much more exaggerated and maximalist style. The filmmaker has also said the movie explores group dynamics and the behavior of people trapped together in a confined environment.

That approach appears to line up with Madison’s comments about the movie’s unusual tone, which she says combines comedy, drama, and stranger elements that she hasn’t encountered in previous projects.

Poe’s original The Masque of the Red Death follows Prince Prospero, who attempts to escape a deadly plague by retreating into a fortified abbey with members of the aristocracy. While the Red Death ravages the world outside, the wealthy inhabitants hold a lavish masquerade—until death finds its way inside.

The story was first published in 1842 and later received one of its most famous cinematic adaptations in 1964, when director Roger Corman brought the tale to the screen with Vincent Price as part of his celebrated Poe cycle.

A24 has not yet announced an exact release date for its new The Masque of the Red Death, but according to Madison, audiences should expect the film sometime in 2027.
