With the imminent release of a new Early Access update for ‘The Outlast Trials‘ and the recent introduction of a tie-in comic book series, Red Barrels offers an inside look at the game’s creation with a making-of documentary, produced in collaboration with The Escapist. This half-hour documentary, titled “Outlast: The Challenges of Trials,” delves into the developer’s journey as they venture into the realm of multiplayer horror games for the first time.

The documentary showcases key members of the Red Barrels team, granting fans a rare glimpse into the studio’s creative process, the hurdles they faced, and the victories they achieved while crafting ‘The Outlast Trials.’ Philippe Morin, co-founder of Red Barrels, reflects on their journey, saying, “After Outlast 2, we seriously considered making something completely different.” Morin admits that the team was feeling a bit worn out after the release of the game. “We took some time off, and eventually, the challenge of creating a multiplayer Outlast game felt like a perfect blend of embracing a new challenge while still leveraging our established IP.”

Currently available in Early Access on Steam and the Epic Games Store, ‘The Outlast Trials’ represents a fresh take on the acclaimed Outlast survival horror series. It’s set in the same spine-chilling universe as its predecessors, but this time, players have the option to embark on this harrowing journey alone or team up with friends in groups of up to four.

Taking place during the height of the Cold War, the game casts players as test subjects abducted by the enigmatic Murkoff Corporation. Trapped in a clandestine Murkoff facility, they are thrust into a series of physical and psychological trials, haunted by iconic characters, and challenged to maintain their sanity, either as individuals or in a team.

‘The Outlast Trials’ is poised to make its debut on PlayStation and Xbox in 2024, featuring crossplay functionality across consoles and PC. As Red Barrels ventures into uncharted multiplayer horror territory, fans eagerly anticipate the next chilling installment in the Outlast series.
