Possible Trancers TV Series: Jack Deth Set to Make a Comeback on Leading Streaming Platform
Full Moon founder Charles Band dropped some exciting news that has captured the imagination of fans. There’s a possibility that Full Moon will collaborate with a prominent streaming service to breathe new life into the beloved Trancers franchise as a TV series.
Band revealed, “We have a couple of really interesting possible reboot deals brewing. Now, of course, everything’s slowed down or stopped because of the writers’ strike and the SAG strike, but in time they’ll turn around, and it will be nice to see some of these movies like Trancers, which is one of them, get made – in the case of Trancers, into a really hopefully well-appointed series on one of the bigger streaming services.”
Trancers holds a special place in the hearts of many Full Moon fans, and the prospect of a TV series has reignited hope for the continuation of this beloved franchise. The journey began with the original Trancers in 1984, where Tim Thomerson portrayed the iconic character Jack Deth, a police trooper from the 23rd century tasked with hunting down trancers – people turned into violent, mindless “zombies” by a psychic villain. Deth’s mission takes him back to 1984 to bring the villain to justice, but the emergence of new trancer variations keeps pulling him back into action in subsequent films like Trancers II: The Return of Jack Deth (1991), Trancers III: Deth Lives (1992), Trancers 4: Jack of Swords (1994), Trancers 5: Sudden Deth (1995), and Trancers 6 (2002). Tim Thomerson reprised the role of Jack Deth in all the sequels, except for Trancers 6, where Zette Sullivan portrayed his daughter Jo Deth. Additionally, a 20-minute short film titled Trancers: City of Lost Angels, shot in the ’80s but not released until 2013, also contributes to the franchise.
Despite initial talk of another Trancers movie with Tim Thomerson, set in China and possibly featuring Bill Moseley, the project never came to fruition. Now, Thomerson’s age at 77 might raise some questions about reprising the role of Jack Deth, but as Harrison Ford showed with Indiana Jones at 80, never say never.
Whether Thomerson returns or not, the Trancers franchise boasts a captivating concept that could translate well to a TV series. The story revolves around a formidable trooper pursuing mindless and violent beings while employing a unique time travel approach, where individuals from the future can send their consciousness back in time to inhabit the bodies of ancestors. This, along with futuristic tech like time machines, androids, and intriguing gadgets, such as the “long second” watch that alters time perception, makes for a promising and dynamic series.
