Paul Giamatti to Lead ‘Hostel’ TV Series in Development
According to a report from THR, Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti, known for his deep-rooted love for horror, is gearing up to take on a pivotal role in the upcoming “Hostel” TV series. Eli Roth, the visionary behind the original film, is making a comeback, joined by franchise producers Chris Briggs and Mike Fleiss.
While specific plot details remain under wraps as the series is still in its developmental stages, it’s been described as a “modern adaptation” and an “elevated thriller,” promising a fresh take on the horror franchise that first hit screens in 2006 and spawned two sequels.
Roth and Briggs will collaborate on the script, with Roth slated to direct. The trio, including Fleiss, will also serve as executive producers for the series.
Giamatti’s involvement adds an exciting dimension to the project, although details about his character are being kept tightly guarded. The actor’s passion for the genre is evident, as demonstrated by his recent portrayal of the villainous Christian Barbrow in HBO’s “30 Coins.” In a conversation with Bloody Disgusting, Giamatti expressed both his enthusiasm for his role and his enduring love for genre storytelling.
Interestingly, Giamatti’s connection with the “Hostel” universe dates back to his encounters with Roth during the filming of “Hostel” and “The Illusionist” in Prague. In a 2013 interview with EW, he reminisced about discussions with Roth regarding a potential role in the film.
Originally released in 2005, “Hostel” depicted a chilling world where the wealthy indulge in torturing and murdering their captive victims. Roth returned to helm “Hostel: Part II” in 2007, followed by a third installment directed by Scott Spiegel in 2011.
Roth’s eagerness to revisit the grisly realm of “Hostel” isn’t surprising, considering his previous statements expressing a desire to return to both “Hostel” and “Cabin Fever.” In an interview with Cinepop, Roth voiced his intention to reengage with these projects, underscoring his personal connection to them and his desire to steer their creative direction.
