Amazon has pulled the plug on “The Horror of Dolores Roach” After Just One Season

Adapted from the popular podcast, Amazon’s original series “The Horror of Dolores Roach” premiered on Prime Video in July but has now been axed after its debut season.

Starring Justina Machado, the show delivered an eight-episode, half-hour run, weaving a modern narrative inspired by Sweeney Todd. It painted a dark, urban legend touching on themes of love, betrayal, gentrification, and even cannibalism.

The storyline followed Dolores Roach’s return to a drastically transformed Washington Heights after spending 16 years in prison. With only $200 and minimal belongings, she reunites with an old friend, Luis, who offers her shelter in the basement of his rundown storefront. As Dolores struggles to grasp stability in her altered world, she’s pushed to extreme measures to survive. Her relationship with Luis takes a dangerously symbiotic turn as they navigate newfound success and their own peculiar tendencies.

The cast included Alejandro Hernandez, Kita Updike, K. Todd Freeman, Cyndi Lauper, Marc Maron, Jean Yoon, Judy Reyes, and Jeffery Self.

Initially a one-woman play created by Aaron Mark titled Empanada Loca, the show’s journey started from Mark’s podcast adaptation. He wrote and directed the original podcast and penned the pilot for the series. The production boasted a lineup of co-showrunners and executive producers, including Dara Resnik, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, Jeremy Gold, Chris Dickie, Dawn Ostroff, Mimi O’Donnell, Justin McGoldrick, Gloria Calderón Kellett, and Roxann Dawson, who directed the pilot.
