Back in 2019, Adult Swim made an exciting announcement about their upcoming mini-series ‘Uzumaki,’ based on the acclaimed supernatural horror manga by the legendary author Junji Ito. However, the project hit a delay with no confirmed release date for quite some time. But fear not, fans were treated to a brand new, eerie trailer at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, suggesting that the wait may have been worth it after all.

The trailer showcases stunning animation that faithfully captures Junji Ito’s nightmarish art style, raising anticipation for what promises to be an unsettling and gripping series.

Although a specific release date is still pending, the unveiling of this captivating trailer brings us one step closer to witnessing the madness that Adult Swim and Junji Ito have in store for us.

The original ‘Uzumaki’ manga, written and illustrated by Junji Ito, revolves around the residents of Kurƍzu-cho, a fictional city haunted by a supernatural curse involving spirals. The manga, consisting of three volumes, was first published in 1998 and follows the story of Kirie Goshima, a high school student living in the cursed town of KurĂŽzu-cho, a fog-bound coastal town in Japan. The manga has previously received a live-action adaptation in 2000 and, more recently, an anime adaptation in Netflix’s ‘Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre’ anthology series.

Directed by Hiroshi Nagahama and featuring music by Colin Stetson, known for his work on ‘Hereditary,’ the ‘Uzumaki’ series promises to be a chilling experience for fans.

Jason DeMarco, Adult Swim/Toonami’s creative director, expressed his excitement for the project, stating, “As a huge fan of Junji Ito, I’m thrilled to be able to tackle one of his signature works, with a team of amazing creators who are all equally devoted to doing justice to this monumental work of horror manga.”

Originally scheduled for a four-episode run in October 2022 on Toonami, the path to the release of ‘Uzumaki’ has been a long and winding one. However, with the arrival of this new trailer, it appears that we are finally approaching the realm of ‘Uzumaki’ madness. Stay tuned for further updates as they emerge.”
