Parents in Miami Springs, Florida are up in arms after their fourth graders were shown a sizeable chunk of a Winnie the Pooh-themed horror film.
According to CBS News Miami, a math teacher showed his fourth-grade class between 20 and 30 minutes of the slasher film Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.
The movie was made after the characters in Winnie the Pooh entered the public domain and tells the story of Pooh and Piglet going mad and seeking vengeance after an adult Christopher Robbin leaves them behind to go to college.
The movie was not rated by the Motion Picture Association and was selected by children in the class, according to CBS News Miami.
“He didn’t stop the movie, even though there were kids saying, ‘Hey, stop the movie, we don’t want to watch this’,” said parent Michelle Diaz.
The school is a charter school operating outside the purview of the school district it is located in and hires its personnel independently.
“The Academy for Innovative Education has become aware that a segment of a horror movie was shown to fourth graders, Monday, October 2, 2023, that was not suitable for the age group,” said the school in a statement to CBS News Miami. “Our administration promptly addressed this issue directly with the teacher and has taken appropriate action to ensure the safety and well-being of students.”
The school says it is “actively monitoring the students and our mental health counselor and principal have already met with those students who have expressed concerns.”
