Beloved actor James McCaffrey, recognized by video game enthusiasts as the iconic voice of Max Payne in the Max Payne series, has sadly passed away at 65. The news initially surfaced through a heartfelt announcement made by his close friend, Kevin Dillon, on Dillon’s Instagram account. Later, TMZ confirmed the actor’s passing through a representative.

Renowned as one of Dick Wolf’s proteges, McCaffrey carved a successful 35-year career in film and television following his training at the Actor’s Studio. His representative reflected, “He remained passionate about crafting characters, even as his striking looks often steered him toward leading roles.”

McCaffrey’s versatile talent graced numerous television series and films, with his portrayal of the iconic NYPD cop turned vigilante, Max Payne, etching him into the hearts of gaming enthusiasts. He lent his voice to all three games in the Max Payne series and made a cameo appearance in the 2008 film adaptation directed by John Moore, based on the first game.

Beyond his Max Payne acclaim, McCaffrey also left an indelible mark voicing characters such as Alex Casey in Alan Wake and its sequel, Zachariah Trench in Control, and Edward Carnby in the 2008 Alone in the Dark game.

For television audiences, McCaffrey’s recurring role as Jimmy Keefe in the FX series Rescue Me, sharing the screen with Denis Leary, remains a standout moment in his career. His contributions to both the gaming and entertainment realms will be remembered fondly by fans worldwide.
