In 2020, it was announced that Ari Aster, known for his work on “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” would produce an English-language remake of the eccentric South Korean film “Save the Green Planet!” Now, according to Variety, Yorgos Lanthimos, recognized for his film “Poor Things,” is set to helm the project.

The remake will be produced by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures, alongside Ari Aster’s Square Peg and CJ ENM (formerly CJ Entertainment).

The original film, directed and written by Joon-hwan Jang, follows Byeong-gu, who is convinced that Earth is facing an imminent alien invasion, and he is the only one who can prevent it. With the help of his loyal girlfriend, he kidnaps and subjects corporate executives and politicians whom he suspects to be aliens to brutal torture.

“Save the Green Planet!” is a unique blend of genres, including science fiction, comedy, horror, and psychological thriller, characterized by its unexpected twists and shocking moments.

Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen of Square Peg praised the original film, stating, “Swinging with youthful abandon between white-knuckle suspense, absurd slapstick, grim horror, and a deeply felt (and earned) sense of tragedy, Save The Green Planet! is one of the most remarkable films to come out of South Korea – among this recent wave or any wave, for that matter.”
