Remember when the Y2K bug had everyone convinced the world would end at the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2000? Y2K, A24’s new dial-up disaster comedy, imagines a world where that apocalypse actually happens. Set to hit theaters on December 6, the film delivers a hilarious and bloody take on the end of the millennium. Check out the new trailer below for a glimpse of the chaos to come.
The story unfolds on the final night of 1999, where two high school juniors crash a New Year’s Eve party—and quickly find themselves fighting for their lives. The film stars Jaeden Martell (It, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone) and Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2) as the unlucky teens caught in the madness.
Y2K features an ensemble cast that includes Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), Lachlan Watson (Chucky, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Mason Gooding (Scream 2022, Scream VI), The Kid Laroi, Tim Heidecker (Us), Eduardo Franco (Stranger Things), Miles Robbins (Daniel Isn’t Real, Halloween 2018), Alicia Silverstone (The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Lodge), Fred Hechinger (Fear Street), Daniel Zolghadri (Funny Pages), and Fred Durst.
Directed by former SNL cast member and comedian Kyle Mooney in his feature debut, Y2K is based on a screenplay co-written with producer Evan Winter.
In her SXSW review, Meagan praised the film for its “pitch-perfect, game-for-anything ensemble” and “great practical effects behind the carnage.” She also noted that Y2K offers “the most entertaining, funny-bone-tickling apocalyptic scenario since This Is the End.”
As for the horror element, Y2K takes the Y2K tech crash idea to the extreme, with a lethal uprising of machines that plays out like Maximum Overdrive for the millennial generation. Thanks to Weta Workshop’s impressive practical effects, the murderous robots are brought to life in all their bloody glory.
Get ready to relive the turn of the century in the most absurd and entertaining way possible—Y2K is sure to be a wild ride.
