The American box office should have received a severe weather warning as Twisters left its competitors in the dust with an $80 million opening.

The crowd-pleasing disaster film starring Glen Powell knocked Despicable Me 4 out of the top spot, but that film held on, taking in over $23 million in its third weekend. In addition Inside Out 2 now in its sixth weekend pulled in a nice $12.8 million.

But Nicolas Cage’s Longlegs isn’t dust in the wind, the horror-thriller managed to still kill it coming in at a respectable $11.6 million in its second week. Alas, poor MaXXXine dropped a whopping 60% in its third week securing the number nine spot and falling into the six-figure bracket with just over $235K.

Twisters might not be at number one for long though. Deadpool and Wolverine opens this upcoming weekend and that film is expected to pass the $100 million mark in its first three days. But mega stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have a new colleague to welcome to their group, with Twisters, Glen Powell has proven he can open a big-budget movie, making him an exclusive member of the marquee elite.

Practically a no-name two years ago, it wasn’t until 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick that Powell flew into the spotlight. Then his surprise rom-com sleeper Anyone But You did surprisingly well both at the box office and on digital. His next notable role was in Hitman now streaming on Netflix.

As for Powell’s upcoming movies, he has signed up for a Running Man remake (based on the Stephen King novel) directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Last Night in Soho).

“We’ve been going back and forth on script stuff, and it’s so fun. The world that Edgar’s developed on this thing is just outrageous,” Powell said to IndieWire. “It’s so good. And really, we’re both such big fans of the Stephen King book, and it will be a great character. I’m so fired up about it.”

There is no release date regarding The Running Man as of this writing.
